Starcraft Remastered

Since the custom scene is quite dead in SC2, I wonder if this will help. Also it'd be nice if Blizzard addressed unit limits in those massive 3v3 Zero Clutter games... would be cool if they were allowed to use 2017 hardware.

Irrelevant. This is a true remaster with the exact gameplay - which is most important to the original fans.

This. The worst thing most studios do when remastering a game is change how the game is played, which is exactly the opposite reason why anyone would replay a 'remastered' game they've already played once.

There are two things I would like, neither of which would be true to the original.

The first is the ability to zoom in and out.

The second is the ability to form unit groupings larger than 12.

But then honestly I'm probably not the intended audience for this. I enjoyed SC1 and SC:BW, but I can't see myself paying for the remastered version.

Looking at the video they showed, the only thing changed is higher resolution graphics. While nice, it's not enough for me to bother with it. It would have been nice if they added better graphical effects, lighting and shadows.

I'm not sure what the point is in this; I think the only reason they've done it is possibly for esports revenue?

I just find it a bit weird that they have the SC2 engine, why not re-render SC1 using that engine, instead of having visually nicer artwork with horribly dated-looking three-frame animations of motion and 2D character representations. As an amateur mod effort I might have said good job, but as an effort that (from what I've heard) they intend to make money out of, it looks pretty shabby by today's standards.

If I can ever be bothered to, I might try to pick it up at an absolute bargain-basement price as it's been a long time since I tried to complete the Brood War mission 'True Colours' 🙂

Using a different engine means the gameplay will not be the same. You can already play all the SC1 campaign missions in SC2, people have made it.

I fail to see how using a different engine and thus making slight changes to the gameplay would be a bad thing.

Because it wouldn't be remaster of the original. The target market for this is people who want *the exact same gameplay* as the original but with higher graphic fidelity. Changing the core gameplay exiles those players (because they want the gameplay of the original). In addition, as several others have stated, you can already play the SC1 campaign in the SC2 engine, via missions made by players. There's some players who wanted that, and so the missions were made.

One other aspect of this is that the Remaster will most likely be far, far easier for Blizzard to maintain. StarCraft came out in... 1998 I believe, which means it probably ran on DirectX 6, and it used the original Battle.Net, which has been somewhat shuttered by Blizzard. This is also a sort of natural evolution of what Blizzard did for Diablo inside of Diablo III, which was create a one-off event that allowed players to relive the original game. If this game does well, I wouldn't be too surprised to see other remasters announced... potentially at BlizzCon!

It also appears that they are now properly supporting wide screen aspect ratios. (if that is what you meant by higher resolution graphics, my apologies)

Mostly I meant higher resolution textures, but I wasn't aware of the lack of some aspect ratios.

You mean that you don't enjoy how StarCraft II turned into an episode of a bad CW drama? 😱

On the next episode of Zergs of our Lives, will Jim and Sarah finally get together? But wait, the Swarm is running out of control and the Overmind resurrected Arcturus is gaining power! Will our heroes save the galaxy while also getting married? Stay tuned next week!

Kerrigan: "I will have my REVENGE!"
Zerg forces attack clone army of resurrected Mengsk.
Mengsk: "Mouhaha I am too powerful! You will never defeat me! Mouhaha I am so eeevil!"
Kerrigan: "REVENGE!"
Raynor: "You have to let go of revenge Sarah! Revenge can't win this time."
Kerrigan: "Oh Raynor, what will we do?"
Raynor: "We can only defeat Mengsk with the power of love!"
Kerrigan: "Oh Raynor! You've always been there for me."
Kerrigan and Raynor put their hands together, and with the power of love they defeat Mengsk's army.
Mengsk: "Ahhhh! Not the power of love!"
Kerrigan: "The time has come... for justice, Mengsk"
Mengsk: "AHHHH!" Explodes into plasma

Ending:

Kerrigan: "Thank you Raynor. You've taught me that love is more important than revenge."
Raynor: "Always ma pleasure Darlin'."

When is this coming out and is it just the original or does it encompass Brood War as well? Also, how much are they asking? The site isn't loading for me on mobile.
