For those who didn't know, Blizzard is updating some of their older games with updated graphics and minor bug fixes. Starcraft/Brood Wars was finally released today with higher resolutions (supports 4K) and higher resolution textures (looks like SC2 now). There were some minor bug fixes and the official word on the CCMU bug is they are waiting to see what the community says about it after release and they will go from there.

So far, the reviews from players are stellar with many old fans coming back to the series and many new fans realizing how great the older RTS games were/are. I'm going to give it a few months to see where the reviews are at once the new car smell wears off, but if the game is truly the same game but with better graphics, I'll be grabbing it down the road as Brood Wars is still my favorite RTS of all time.

The rumors for the other remasters are Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction is the next remaster and Warcraft 3 being the final. I wish they would throw Warcraft 2 on their list for remasters, but I'm guessing that one may be a bit too dated to remaster.

If anyone has tried the remaster, feel free to weigh in here.

Hi Commanders,

The client does have a feature that allows offline play with HD for 30 days when you login at least once.

When you restart the game client the back ground should have a red hue and say StarCraft Remastered in the top right corner and you are free to play LAN and SP.

It seems they are fixing the loss of HD graphics while in offline mode, but a lot of people are reporting invalidation errors when they are not logged in.

Played this yesterday... even got 2 other people in. They definitely made it look better while keeping the original true. It was a little odd though because of how much space units / buildings take up on a 4k resolution, but it was still pretty fun.

Also they gave away pizza to people that got together and played it on LAN, pretty cool of them!

EDIT:

Also I'd buy both a Diablo 1 and a Diablo 2 remaster. I never got too far into WC3 even though I own it... I probably played WC1 & 2 more.

UPDATE

Apparently if you want HD graphics, you must have a constant internet connection. If you disconnect and try to play offline, the game reverts back to normal graphics. So they basically just released an HD texture pack that requires internet connection. People are extremely upset about this as many people wanted to install this on a laptop and found out after leaving their home/business that the HD graphics were disabled without an internet connection.

Just... WHY. Why mandate an internet connection for this? It's a damned texture(bitmap?) mod. Let it roll offline.

Because it's Blizzard. You know, the ones who fired Blizzard North because they felt a bunch of "straight from college" kids could make a better Diablo than the team who made Diablo.

Wait, people are upset about having to be connected to the internet to play a game that is 98% multi-player? People never cease to amaze.

I can understand how its dumb, but on the other hand, this is only going to impact that 0.1% of people that play SC for the single player with their internet off. The other 99.99% are just bitching because thats what the internet does.

Dang, that is kinda shady. It's likely just so they can confirm you bought the texture pack ... I noticed when my wife d/l the game (she didn't pay for the remaster) it was the exact same file size, only difference was that hers launched the classic version and mine was HD. We played in a game together just fine.

It's likely their DRM choice... pretty crappy I must say.

Well, which is it? Sgt-flame, "many people" want to play on a laptop without the internet connected, or Stuka87, "0.1%" want to do so?

Well, people don't play the game 20 years after launch for the short campaign. They play it for the competitive multi-player. There is the use case of a LAN party, as LAN play is still available in it. But I have not been to a LAN party with no internet since the 90's.

I think you need to stop assuming and just speak for yourself. SC singleplayer was all I played back in the day, and probably all I'd care to play these days too. We don't all have time or desire to play such a game online, that doesn't mean we aren't part of the userbase.

Is it just the HD textures that you lose? There are other benefits such as better resolution support.

I haven't played the remastered version yet, but from the videos I saw, it is not like SC2 at all. Yes, they updated the graphics and have higher resolution, but it's not 3D models like SC2. Thus they are keeping it still pretty true to the original graphics.

Meh.. I asked Blizzard for a refund once I realized the hd options don't work offline. Much as I love StarCraft, I hate these type of practices.

Why would HD not work if you're not online? That's so weird.
My guess is that Blizzard implemented the check online to see if you bought the game rather than making it an offline setting, because then people would figure out how to modify it and get it free (the non-HD version is free from Blizzard now if you didn't know).
