For inappropriate nick name.

ScrtJewSanta. I dunno if they don't like Jews, or maybe just secretive ones.

Also the words Hitler and Stalin are censored in chat so do not try to talk about history on bnet.

I definitely had more inappropriate names in WC3, so I wonder if it just because of the beta or if they are cracking down on jewish santas everywhere.

I will admit a little bit of regret, but they could have just censored the word in the naming system, or deleted the nickname and sent me a warning.

I do agree that the ban was wrong. A warning would be much more appropriate. However...

Dont pretend like you dont know what is going on here. Whenever the word "JEW" is used on the internet, there's AT LEAST a 30% chance it is used in some sort of a conversation, stateement or an article aimed at jews in some negative way. Therefore, it makes sense that this word would be sensored on Bnet, where a large part of users are stupid, uneducated, racist 13 year old kids. I bet if you try to use the word N***er, it will be sensored too. but I bet you wouldnt notice that, and you wouldnt call that "history" because it has been beaten into your head not to use this term in this country. A Jew is a normal word you might say, while the N word is an insult... Wrong. In eastern europe the N word is used to describe the nationality of any black person, and no black person will take offence when called that.

Same issue with words "Hitler" and "Stalin" both words are often used in inflamatory discussions on the internet either directed agaisnt jews, against germany or against Russia. I constantly see people talking about Stalin in games like Guild Wars and Diablo. Such discussions often end in angry, hateful remarks toward Russia or United states. I constantly see statements ranging from "America is better than Russia" to "We should have nuked you while we still could during the cold war".

Look, no one is sayihng that you cannot have freedom of speech. That is your right. but take that freedom of speach to internet forums or blogs where it belongs! It really doesnt belong in video game lobbies because it affects young minds and leads to inflamatory discussions.

A failure of common sense strikes again.

OP imo, the name is not offensive, but that is by the by.

Secondly if the company involved have come to the conclusion that it is offensive, then you should be notified and given a chance to change the name, whether you want to or not - that is their perogative.

A flat ban, no warning, is not a satisfactory outcome for anyone. Your annoyed, they look like Nazi's (ooh wait they didn't like Jews much either....)

Shame you lost out on your BETA participation.

I actually have not lost my beta participation because I do have access to a lot of keys that my friends and I use to play together.

However I do agree that it was a bit harsh to just flat out ban me over the name, I did not think my name was as extreme as some are making it out to be that I was simply asking for a ban. Was it pushing the limits? Perhaps, but they seemed to have a pretty strict name filter and it did not violate it.

I do wonder if I had paid sixty bucks for the game if I would at least receive a warning.

I kind of have to laugh at all the "have you learned your lesson yet newb" naysayers on here as if I am some kind of bully on the playground. I made a name from an Archer quote. It was funny, I do not care if Afuzzyreptile thinks so or not, this is why humor is subjective.

People are too sensitive and have a habit of giving power to a few words, personally I think it is kind of stupid. Out of everything that we go through in life is it truly worth your time to get bent out of shape over a word?

Great points on the discussion of Hitler and Stalin bit. The kids on bnet are perhaps a bit young and impressionable, however they do begin to learn about these wars in detail at these same ages. Granted they may be learning in a classroom but I am unsure that really means they are learning anything less bias than they might on bnet.

I do want to add that my history comment was only towards those two names, and really to illustrate that I thought it a bit odd that their censor blocked those names, but did not block the word jew from my name creation process.

I guarantee if I had used the word ni**er it would never have let me make the name. I think if anything I have provided a beta service by showing them that their filter is perhaps inadequate for their sensitivities.

Honestly i personally think its because gamers nowadays, tend be even younger than they use to be before, I mean i was doing volunteer for a grade 3 soccer team and they were already playing runescape or some crap, i mean in grade 3 i was still playing with my little action figures, I think thats why there has been so much more censorship now a days...

I wouldn't be shocked if there was more to this story. However, having said that, I don't think Blizzard needs to give anyone a reason to ban them from a beta. You are playing a largely stable game completely for free and Blizzard has very low expectations of you actually bugging a single damn thing.

People are going to voice their opinions in stupid, obnoxious, and offensive ways no matter what you do to censor them. These stupid chat filters and name bans end up being more of a hassle than anything in the end because if someone wants to be stupid, obnoxious, and offensive, they're going to do it no matter what you do to try and stop them.

You being banned for that name is extremely lame. Let's all hope that Blizzard isn't this strict once the game is actually released.

Banned for retarded name that is possibly offensive. And judging from your posts I bet there is more asshattery not included in your story. Not sure what the problem is.

You were pushing an envelope you knew to exist (however stupid) and have paid the consequences.

Admit it or not, you were trolling with a name like that and now you're trolling here, and denying the troll is part of your gig.

You're just pissed off that your little game came to an end on bnet, and now you're here to pick a fight. I always marvel at people with your kind of free time.

In defense of Blizzard's action, I don't think they need to dish out warnings in beta, it's too much hassle when they can just send out another beta invite to someone else. It's not like they owe the beta to anyone.

Other than that - disappointing, but not surprising. Blizzard has been engaging in censorship and fucking it up at least throughout WoW (anyone remember Blizzard stomping on the guilds which advertised themselves as friendly to gay players?). A quick google of the components of the nickname finds, among other things, a wikipedia page of historical crypto-jews, a "Secret Jew" webcomic by some Blumenthal guy, and talk of secret santa practices in jewish communities. Doesn't seem too offensive.

What do you want to bet "Crusader" would be found to be an acceptable bnet nickname despite it literally describes a person going to war for Christianity? (And what do you know, the WoW Paladin has a Crusader Aura and everything!) OTOH "Jihadi" is equivalent and I doubt it would be tolerated.

A person going to war for Christianity is not the only definition of Crusader, and these days, I'd be willing to bet that is not even the most recognized definition.

I agree with other posters that you are pushing the line here. You are most likely not Jewish and doing this to make fun of Jewish people or at least be an asshat. If you can give me a believable/reasonable explanation as to why you chose that name, then i might see your point, but I highly doubt you have one.

"More to the story"

What do you envision exactly that I was doing? I am interested in your imaginings of what I have done.

I already did, I bugged their name censor thingamabob.

I never said I was providing them a service though, just that I got banned for being ScrtJewSanta.

Also while the game might currently be free, let us not kid ourselves I will be buying it. I missed the gogamer 25$ off 100 sale or I would have preordered already. If nothing else I am glad that I got the name banned in the beta, now I have to think of another name for the retail version.

I have stated multiple times in this thread where the name came from. RTFT. Also I want you to know that I <3 U. And I <3 pedo.bear too.

Anyone else notice this kind of stuff always comes from the people with the most posts?

My "little game"? What exactly do you people seriously envision me doing on bnet. I feel like some kind of secret mastermind plotting behind the glow of my 3 monitors (all showing the same image bc eyefinity doesn't like SC2)

You guys take the internet way too seriously. Honestly I started the thread lightheartedly and some of you out there are way serious about your bnet nicknames.

Also I am still on bnet, just RIP ScrtJewSanta.

I really didn't find it very offensive. Maybe MuslimEasterRabbit would be offensive, or Christian______________. I just realized I do not even KNOW a non-christian make believe person or creature! I cannot even fill in the blank. Wow, I fail.

Orchestrating a Battlenet-wide conspiracy to marginalize non-white races, obviously.

I love people that go around all day trying so hard to be offended that a Jew saying "Jew" makes them cry and ban people. And then others of the same creed will back them up on being that ridiculous.

OP, I apologize for humanity. It's kinda sad how hard people try to be annoying. :\

Oh and about your last post, no, nothing with Christ in it will be deemed "offensive". Because you can stab a Christian with a spear and they won't be offended. Well, nobody will care if they are offended. Which is the same thing, right?

I do apologize in that I have accidentally led you to believe I am jewish. It is a quote from Archer no more no less. I found it hilarious and was watching it before I got my friend beta pass therefor ScrtJewSanta was born, let him rest in peace. The name is meant to be a kind of nonsensical paradox and I SERIOUSLY doubt that anyone was offended by it.

I do still think it is a bit silly how easily offended everyone is, perhaps they have a right to be if they are Jewish, but I doubt they are.

Also your last paragraph was epic.

Wow, you guys give me a lot of credit. Wait, the Jewish are considered noncaucasian? Also I will take on this task but will require at minimum 2 lackies and a bouncer type. Perhaps one person who can mock the voice from Unforgivable would be effective too.

Bnet is serious business.

Certainly the usage of the word has expanded from war for Christianity to (ironically?) referring to many zealous actions, but that is not a definition distinct from the original. It's just a wider definition which includes the old one. If I were to see "Killa420Killa" being negative about Muslims in game chat, and I were to see "Crusader" being negative about Muslims in game chat, I would definitely suspect that the latter dude's nick doesn't originate from him being on a crusade for better quality coffee. That said, I have seen "jihad" used in the exact same generic sense as "crusade". Maybe (hopefully) it'd be allowed the same.

The WoW paladin with their Crusader Aura is a clear-cut religious zealot. Although their faith is not exactly Christianity, their buildings, vestments etc appear obviously closer to Christianity than to other existing faiths.

I don't know, I suppose I picture you joining chat and getting into some sort of argument with someone where you call them hitler, at which point you realize that hitler is a censored word and at which point, they realize they'd like to report you. So you get reported, admin comes along and decides he doesn't want to deal with your shit and bans you. Often times, people get banned not because of 1 single thing, but because several things came together at the same time.

The assumption here, on my part, (but it is a safe one) is that Blizzard isn't watching every name that beats the filter. They are taking action when one of your peers reports your name.
