Costco had samples of Starbucks VIA instant coffee so I had to try it. It was good and definitely better than Taster's Choice. I would say it's better than some cheap brewed coffee. I say they have a hit on their hands. The only problem is it's too expensive. Will be interesting to see if the people will pay the premium in this economy. My guess is yes.

It's $7 or $8 a bag, right? My girlfriend gets it quite frequently, and swears by it. She hates to drink anything else.

I agree. I got some samples in the mail, and it's damned good for instant coffee. It isn't something I'd necessarily buy on a regular basis, but it would be great for camping, where water to wash a real coffee maker may be in short supply.

For some reason, crappy instant coffee is a part of the camping experience for me.

I think their real target is overseas, especially Asia where instant coffee makes up bulk of the sales. That's $20 billion market in which Starbucks has no exposure.

yeah, someone i know just tried it recently and said it tasted like ass. i trust this person a LOT (at least far as ass goes).

so now i'm scared to try it.

i don't go camping much anyway, so not sure i'd ever even need it. i much prefer a nice hotel room or cabin (my roughing it)....with a minimum of a hottub. ;)

If you like coffee, you should try it. It's the best I've had for instant. It doesn't equal fresh brewed, but it's better than some fresh brewed coffee I've had.

That is Starbucks ground coffee.

This is instant coffee which is like $1 a cup. Pretty expensive for instant coffee, but supposedly it tastes just like Starbucks coffee which is a bargain if you're spending $2-3 on coffee every day.

I guess if you like the scorched coffee-like swill that Starbucks sells, you'd probably like the instant version as well.

IIRC most of the rest of the world drinks instant. The US is practically the only country that predominately drinks brewed coffee.

That said, even brands like Taster's Choice have come a long way in the 30 years since I was in college and drank it regularly. Back then it was meh. Today it makes a decent cup. Better than some urn coffee thats was brewed an hour ago.

I tried the Italian Roast this morning. It really didn't have any flavor at all.

I got a couple free samples a while back, but I don't think I ever got around to trying it.

You buy a jar of Folger's Crystals, you put it in the cupboard, you forget about it. Then later on when you need it, it's there. It lasts forever. It's freeze-dried. Freeze-dried Crystals.

It's pretty good. I had some this morning. The only criticism I have is that there is a bit of that instant coffee aftertaste..

make sure you are using the right amount of water. each packet only covers 8 ounces of water and most coffee mugs are more than 8 oz.

i think it is great. good for camping, conferences that have crappy coffee but offer hot water, and tailgating (found out this weekend).

people have also been using it for cooking. i heard that there is a recipie for a flank steak rub floating around the internet.

I don't like coffe by itself. It's gotta be a caramel machiatto or a frappachino.
