I've seen tip jars in every single Starbucks I've ever been to.

I've never actually put anything into it... if the workers aren't happy with their wages, they should find a new job. it's not like they're doing anything other than pressing buttons, and they don't work in a job that's based sub-minimum wage because it's a tip-earning job.

They are coffee pourers, just like the ones at Dunkin Donuts.

And I dont understand the whole "tip jar" next to the register either. You dont see any of these at BK or McDonalds, so why at Starbucks/Dunkin Donuts/etc. At the end of the day, they are all fast food joints.

I don't see why Starbucks is complaining. They were in clear violation of the law. They should be paying their managers more money out of their own pocket, not taking it away from the employees who need the tip money the most.

Because the same people that are dumb enough to pay $5 for a cup of coffee on a more than regular basis are dumb enough to squander money by tossing it in the jar.

Starbucks has a coffee tradition much different than what it is now. There was a time when all machines were still manual (technically called semi-automatic); getting a good espresso, cappuccino, latte, etc. out of such a machine does actually take skill. It's for this reason that people started tipping Baristas.

Starbucks has simply moved away from those traditions, and America has this fascination with tipping. I see tip jars at nearly every place I frequent.

I don't know about this. A friend of mine used to work at starbucks and usually the managers did the same crap the regular baristas did. Taking orders, making drinks, running the register, etc. Why shouldn't they get a portion of the tip money too?

Thanks for posting the article. I did not know it was illegal for supervisors and managers to share in tips. I also did not know that it's so widely agreed that Starbucks managers need to be paid more.

That might be true but what's the point of the tip? Are you tipping because you feel they're getting underpaid or are you tipping for good service? If the manager is performing the same service why shouldn't he get a tip too? That's what they get for blurring the lines of their job. Either they just manage or they just perform grunt duties.

It will be a cold day in H E double hockey sticks before I give a tip after paying $5 for a cup of coffee. For that price you would think the employees would be paid well with good benefits.

Lets all go to Dunkin Donuts for some $1 coffee to discuss this.
