Why in the future robots don't fly the ships?

Should have about 10 billion times faster reaction with optimal tactics and perfect aim with those fancy pew pew lasers.

In worlds that are defined by angry kittys and "the force", I think we can let it slide that robots aren't as integrated as you'd think they should be.

Presumably artificial intelligence has not been invented in those universes. Or at least not so developed to be fully autonomous and trustworthy to make combat decisions.

R2D2 is the most mysterious character in the series. He appears to be almost completely helpless and possess a child-like innocence, yet is always in the right place at the right time to save the day. It is reminiscent of Isaac Asimov's "I Robot" series where eventually it is revealed that the robots have altered the entire course of human history to ensure we live in the best of all possible worlds. That includes insuring that the average robot is incapable of replacing humans for every task.

"What began as a conflict over the transfer of consciousness from flesh to machines escalated into a war which has decimated a million worlds."
