Greetings,

I recently ordered the 4 dvd Star Wars Trilogy set from you folks' website (Order #xxxxxxxxx). I have been talking with several of my friends, and all of us are upset about the UPC requirement for your rebate. In the past there has been a UPC sticker on the cellophane wrapper of such sets that could be submitted. One of the main selling points of this set is the long-term collectibility value. This value would be effectively destroyed by mutilating the box by carving out the UPC symbol.

Several of my friends have e-mailed you at this address and have received varying responses. One received a $15 credit to his credit card, several were told that a photocopy of the UPC along with a copy of their orders would be accepted. Another was basiclly told 'tough luck' and to send the original UPC from the box.

Obviously the credit is the easiest method, but I'm troubled that this is an issue at all! You guys should know that people are nuts about collecting all things Star Wars. Simpsons collectors are the same way, and you put the UPCs on external stickers for those rebates!

Also, obviously, if you insist that the original UPCs are required from the box you are going to be inundated with returns. Hopefully this will all work out smoothly for all of us.

I look forward to hearing from you on this matter.

Sincerely,

Nicholas _________

Nice work, Funkyman, but I doubt you did that at coconut's website. It says there's a 200 word limit. How'd you get this to them? I submitted another request at their site today, where it says you will get a response from a non-bot within one business day. My previous was on Saturday and I've still gotten a response, today being Wednesday (afternoon). The squeaky wheel gets the grease, and I'm gonna keep squeakin' til I'm greased.

Damn. I did the online "email" thing a week ago and again around 2 days ago and finally got a human response:

Hello,

Thank you for writing to us. We apologize but we will be unable
to accept copies of the UPC code for rebate redemption. As stated
on the rebate form available at the time of purchase, only the
original UPC code will be accepted.
Thank You,

coconuts.com Customer Support

They included a line asking me to include a certain "tracking number" in all inquiries. I guess I'll keep trying until they finally come through. They just got on my Very Bad Sauce List.

I just composed this response to their direct email to me, quoted above:

However, this is hardly fair. I have several friends who were credited $15 and told they didn't have to mutilate their Starwars DVD's boxes to get the rebate. Why cannot you extend to me the very same courtesy? What have I done to deserve this? Their rebate forms said the same thing mine did. Is not my money as good as theirs? Please relent and credit me the $15 and not force me to pull out my razor blade and mutilate my box! Thank you.

Do you do it online or to an actual email address. I'm getting negative responses, when I DO get responses, doing the online contact thing. Thanks.

Edit: Today's Saturday, same day I sent this to them by return email. I got a computer generated response shortly afterward saying I'd hear from them within a business day. A few hours later I got a response. It was the very same message as above:

I went to the website again and submitted another entreaty to be reasonable, adapting one of the messages above, because I'm not in the mood to compose a long tactful letter at this point. I suppose it might be possible to get ahold of them on the telephone and get a really human response. If I can't get that I guess I'll return the package when it comes and be done with Coconuts for good.

Edit: Got a letter that said I'd get a response when the right person was there. Didn't look like a computer generated response. My last submission did NOT have my tracking number, which I wouldn't put on any further communications from them or I'm setting myself up for another sock in the face.

Does anyone have a phone number for Coconuts.com? The only option for contacting them seems to be email.

They told me by email a week ago (over 7 business days) that they would credit $15 in place of the rebate but it hasn't yet happened. Guess I better remind them.

Not yet for me. They emailed me Saturday saying I'd get an answer within one business day, but it didn't happen yet. They aren't good at keeping their promises. I think they are a sort of flaky company. Anyway, I hope that persistence will pay off here. If I have to cut off the UPC, hey, I'll do it I guess. I won't know until I see the box but I hope I can cut it off without making a hole in the box. Then I can maybe glue a copy of the UPC on there and it won't be particularly noticeable unless you inspect it. I know, that's stupid, but not as stupid as just cutting a big rectangle out of the box.

What about contacting Parago? One guy up in the thread said they said they'd accept a copy of the UPC. Isn't Parago going to do all the rebate processing? If they'll accept a copy from one guy they will probably accept it from everybody, right???

Maybe you idiots should have realized this before you cut things out. You ALMOST ALWAYS have to cut out the original UPC code if it's a single rebate for an item, c'mon! I used to work customer service for CompUSA and we would get people all the time that complained about rebates. If it's such a big fvcking deal then don't buy from coconuts, but you must realize it isn't their fault YOU didn't read the terms of the rebate before you so "carelessly" threw your money away. Obviously if a deal is too good to be true, it probably is. You can't expect to get 20 bucks off retail pricing of one of the potentially highest selling DVD boxsets of the century without having to give up something that might hold a tiny smidgeon of importance to you. Holy crap......

Hey, like I said, it won't be the end of the world if I have to send them the original UPC, and thanks Dethman, I thought it was possible to peal that sucker off, WTF, Darth Vader's laser will find no target on my box.

Have people gotten theirs yet? I went into DVDProfiler and they have 3 versions of the Trilogy. A fullscreen, and two widescreen versions, one with deleted scenes (about 3 minutes) and the other without:

Deleted scenes, UPC 24543-12341
Without deleted scenes: UPC 86162-02934

Which are we getting?

Cool. That one retails for $10 more than the other, according to DVDProfiler.

I still haven't heard from a human at Coconuts one week after their email assuring me I'd hear within one business day. Guess I'll have to try again.

The shipment finally did come.

Coconuts never answered my last inquiry asking for a credit of $15 or some absolution from having to carve up my SW box. So, I used plan B:

Scanned the barcode into a high resolution TIFF image, printed it at high resolution on my laser printer on laser printer label stock (sticky back), cut out the UPC to send with the rebate coupon, and pasted my homemade label on instead. It looks quite professional and nobody would ever notice or guess that the "original" UPC isn't on the box - mine looks like an original! After all, many UPC's are printed on stickers. Like I've heard before, "there's more than one way to skin a raaacoon."

Has anyone gotten their $15 rebate check yet? I mailed mine in 2 months ago (10/14/04) and still no word.

www.rebateshq.com doesn't seem to have anything. Any ideas?

I sent them the original UPC. Didn't want to chance being denied. First, I did a high resolution scan of the UPC and printed it out on label stock. Cut it out and applied to the box. It looks just like an original. Nobody would guess in a million years. UPC's are often on stickers. I guess they still might stiff me. I really have my doubts about these Coconuts people.
