Depends on how you define successful?

Will it dethrone WOW, I doubt it. Will it replace SWG, big maybe.

The key criteria for success is the ability to suck you in and keep you hooked with enough replay value to make you forget you are paying close to $200 per year to play this game.

Also I think the MMO scene is getting a bit overplayed and the novelty is starting to wear off.

The issue everyone can roll a Jedi on day one better get fixed or it could overshadow a potentially amazing game. I really hope it does well.

I dont really see the monthly fee as a problem. If you like MMOs and play a lot, it is still much cheaper than buying one new game per month. Personally, I do not like MMOs and so far have refused to even consider playing one. TOR??? maybe I will try it if they offer a free introductory period or something.
Basically though, I am very disappointed that they did not continue the single player KOTOR franchise. Kotor 1 was one of my favorite games and Kotor 2 left an ending that begged for a third game to finish up the storyline. Instead, we get an MMO, which despite what Bioware says about the great content, cannot possibly finish up the storyline of the first 2 single player games. Personally, I prefer single player games that actually have a definite ending and do not require meeting up with other people and that continue on endlessly.
The thing Bioware does best is single player RPGs. Too bad that they abandoned that expertise for the KOTOR franchise. I guess they just could not resist the possibility of an endless cash cow from an MMO. Hope they at least don't turn Mass Effect into an MMO.

You've summed it up well Coloumb, I tend to look back at EQ1 as the greatest game ever but I forget the stuff I hated toward the end. Constant camping for experience, difficult to level/progress, PVP server filled with clowns, tedious corpse runs, tedious travel time to group with friends, having to group with strangers to progress if you fell a couple of levels behind, falling off the f'ing boat, ect. I really hope TOR is fun I really want a fun mmo I can play with friends again.

With it being released this Spring (barring a delay)...I'm wondering when the release date will be announced. Earliest release would be late March from what I've been reading...I'm assuming they would announce the date 2-3 months beforehand.

Not sure what you are referring to here, but KOTOR is not a shooter and not really turn based either. It is a role playing game with pausable combat.

KOTOR uses combat rounds... that's probably what he's talking about.

Really I think TOR is so hyped now that many/most people will probably look at it as a disappointment unless it's just spectacular. I imagine it will be at least a good or above average MMO, though. It'll probably be a day 1 purchase for me unless the initial reviews or word from beta testers is just horrible.

It seems they are REALLY taking their time with this one, not even due to roll out until NOVEMBER of this year!!

Geez, today is freakin' 01-01-11, let that sink in for a minute...

That's right ELEVEN MORE MONTHS for them to get it right!

Whenever I ask at GameStop that is the date they give me...

Little tip: You should never trust a store employee to give you reliable information on ANYTHING. This is especially true for Gamestop employees and particularly true for video game dates.
If they ever get anything right its more of a horrible coincidence than the truth.

DO NOT TRUST THEM

Successful or not, I am buying it on release day. I played SWG for a long while, despite it being terrible at times.

I just wish an updated UO would come out.

I worked at Gamestop for awhile a few years ago and I never lied to any customers about things I did not know. I did, however, tell them if they wanted to return a game and it wasn't broken they got screwed out of money. I got a lot of "oh yeah, it doesn't work you're right" answers.
