Star Wars isn't compelling anymore because of the War on Terror

The United States circa 1977 is very different than the United States 2017. 1977 is still the height of the Cold War and a time when Tom Clancy of all people wrote a novel glamorizing Afghan Taliban fighting against the Soviets. 2017 we're the tottering empire exhausted and weakened due to years of hit and run attacks against us by determined groups of Rebels. In 1977 the war against the Nazis is still pretty fresh and so the villainy of the Stormtrooper helmets is clear. In 2017, Stormtrooper helmets resemble most actual US Army helmets, while the light robes that the Rebels wear resemble jihadi gear.

The US was born from a revolution. Nobody's forgotten that.

As long as the good guys are unambiguously good and the bad guys are unambiguously bad, it's not going to be a problem for people.

Nazis haven't been in the news any less. US Army uniforms don't look a dang thing like stormtrooper armor. Tunics is tunics. Suicide bombers wear whatever will help them blend in.

What movie were you watching? The Star Wars that I saw had an overwhelmingly powerful galactic empire, with near infinite resources and logistical capacity. There was no 'fatigue' from a few hundred random misfits with flying scrap.

His posts in ATOT are as dumb as they are in P&N.

by the end the Empire collapsed...

by the end the Empire collapsed...

Which was completely unrealistic, and borne from Americanized notions of Good vs Evil, David vs Goliath, etc.

Realistically the empire would have descended upon every rebel base with a fleet of a thousand star destroyers, in a scorched earth campaign. They would have WH40k'd the shit out of the 'rebels'.

I dunno - The 1st Order in Force Awakens was still pretty organized AND kicking ass all over the place. Pretty sure they nuked several entire planets with the push of the button. More than The Empire did in 3 previous movies. And the Rebels were now called The Resistance.

The revolution was over 200 years ago. In 1977, bad was the technologically advanced Soviet Union, which analogized with the Empire of Star Wars. 2017, bad is sandal-wearing jihadis who hijack and suicide attack the high-technology us.

They're pretty similar.

That just goes to show how much they had to stretch it to still keep the underdog flavor. That part was so forced and silly.

Helmets are pretty similar, yes. Mostly because human head shapes have not changed dramatically in the last 100 years, and dirt's still the same color, which is why they aren't orange.

You're reaching, really far.
