Star Trek:TOS and Enterprise 1080p episodes on CBS.com

Bookmarked, thanks

Now all we need it TNG, DS9, and Voyager
Unfortunately those were all shot on videotape (before HD was around) and need some serious remastering. Rumors of TNG on Blu-Ray keep leaking out though so eventually it will probably happen.

They re-did all the special effects on the TOS blurays. The first several seasons of TNG could use a bit of spiffing up too.

They'll all be released eventually... hopefully.

They might redo the effects for TNG for its blu-ray release (like they did for TOS). What you are seeing on CBS.com is the Blu-Ray remaster of TOS with the new effects.

I never did get to see the last episode where Lt. Daniels went back to his time. I wanted to see how that whole "temperal cold war" ended...

If it was shot on tape, it would probably be impossible to remaster them to 1080p. They'd all be recorded at 480i. Since you can't make something out of nothing, the best you could do is upscale them.

It is possible that TNG was recorded on film. A lot of shows around the late 80s and early 90s were still using it. Sinefeld for example was shot on 35mm. 35mm Film is high definition by nature.

I hear the TOS Blurays are really high quality. So good you can even see flaws in the set. I'm not a Trek fan anymore but I can appreciate the classics.

I'm tempted to watch a few of these but at 1080p I would be abusing my cable internet for using so much bandwidth so I must decline.

Comcast is taking donations if anyone would like to help them out.

They're really excellent, it's like watching it new. The new FX are tastefully done and fit perfectly with the shows (but you can still watch with the original FX if you want). I picked them up off Amazon a few months back when they were $40 a season.

It's really hard to tell just how good the Blu-Rays are from the CBS 1080p stream because of how compressed it is.

TNG was shot on tape, and all the effects were rendered at 480p. To even attempt to offer an HD version would be prohibitively expensive - the only reason TOS was remastered was because Toshiba was paying for it.

No, i'm pretty sure they were shot on film.

The delay is because they were Edited on tape..meaning you'd have to recut film and redo effects.
Course next gen level fx are hardly difficult its still more trouble than a straight film transfer.

Can't watch the CBS streams anyway so I'll just have to take your word on it. ^_^ Good god, Amazon.ca wants almost $100 for season one on BD. 😱

Yes, it was.

In fact all series were shot on 35mm.

Guess that renders our discussion over. Only Enterprise was shot on tape, and only for Season 4.

Shot on a Sony HDW-F900. Vary similar to the tapeless XDCAM I shot documentaries with in college.

Yes, but Enterprise was originally broadcast in HD (all except S1). Now all 4 seasons can be seen in HD on HDNet.

There was just a recent price mistake where three seasons of TOS on blu ray was $5. Too bad all the orders got canceled but I can't blame them. I just wish the price mistake was at $100, so the people who actually wanted them (aka, not ebayers) had a chance on getting a good price on them. I'm sure I'll buy them all eventually, but this should tide me over in the mean time.

Ahh, you're right. It just means the price tag would be that much worse though... 😱

the price tag probably drops each day as rendering such stuff gets cheaper and cheaper....replicating stng stuff is just not that hard anymore. plus as the pipe line fills with such restoration projects the cost per series has to go down.

yea its amazing you can now watch the original series at a better quality than people who saw it when it first aired🙂

$40 a season was more than reasonable. If you wait until the holiday season you can usually find these things at a great price.

$EDIT$

I see now, well that at least gives me hope...

Maybe they could just remaster the popular episodes for one blu ray disc?

It is but I have them on DVD, so I'm not really in a hurry to double dip on three seasons of TV.

Equipment costs were never an issue. Remastering projects are expensive because of the labor involved. You're basically paying people to touch up a show on a frame-by-frame basis. At this point in time the amount of labor required hasn't been decreasing; technology hasn't done anything to reduce that in the last few years.
