If last week was TNG, then this week was TOS. A civilization that's on a bioship and doesn't know it seems just right. I do think exposing the stars to them all of a sudden should have backfired, but on the other hand, that cameo... 😱

You know what's going to suck? Once this show gets pre-empted for the baseball playoffs.🙁

"For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky". TOS indeed. IIRC, Seth is an atheist, so this was right up his ally.

Forth episode was meh. You pretty much knew where they were going with it as soon as they showed the massive ship and if you had any doubt, that was gone as soon as they walked through the door. So the only thing left was how they played the story out and that was about as cliche as it could have been.

It wasn't a bad episode, there just wasn't a lot to recommend it. Not much in the way of humor. Predictable plot, predictable characters. It was strictly a paint-by-numbers episode.

Maybe its the guilty pleasure aspect.... of having been deprived of new Star Trek for so long. Yes it's by the numbers, but !@#$ if I don't want to recite arithmetic sometimes! The whole comedy / action / drama mixture is going to be hell to manage and strike a right balance. That may be the show's greatest downfall.

heh...I feel the same way 😀 Episode 4 was the best so far.

A big fat meh is right...and giving drugs meant for one species and it works the same on every species? Then the doc injects her with the antidote without even testing it?
At least there was no Prime Directive with the "sun roof". 😛

e4:
the over the top dramatic buildup of the unknown mass, complete with suspenseful music.. lol.

so now the episodes are serious and somewhat thought provoking with some juvenile humor here and there.
wonder when we're going to get a rape scene, say of a 10yr old girl ala Dakota Fanning?

and holy Taken batman.
what kind of budget does the show have?

It'll vary between the two. Even Trek had its funny episodes. But yes, the Orville has its dramatic side. Shocking, ain't it? 😛

I suspect that was more of a favor done for MacFarlane, seeing as he seems to know just about everyone.

I expected this show to be like Galaxy Quest... a comedy/parody with no serious episodes.
we're at e4, and we've had 2 serious episodes.

not liking Orville as a serious show w/juvenile undertones.
just couldn't take the XO getting beaten up seriously. maybe if they tortured her with a feather or something.
but tied up and constant punching to the face.. meh

Be interesting to see if at some point they introduce a new red uniform guy only to have him get killed within 30 seconds of landing on an alien planet.

Well in EP.4 the red shirt (Alara) got shot within 10 minutes of arriving on the bio ship. Though she survived

They could have that happen once or twice more, her then demanding a different colour uniform and it never happening again. And then indeed introducing someone else with a red uniform that keeps getting shot.

about that.. going off into an unknown ship w/o killable red shirts?

ahh.. running joke.. kinda like Kenny in south park.
that would be great if the only person to get shot every episode is alara because she's a red shirt.. lol

IMHO a pretty good episode. If I laugh at least three times during an episode it gets a pretty good rating in my book. I still fret the lack of originality. I could see what was coming from a mile away.

The show, with it's issues is till more ST-like than STD.

I've watched some more, and it's grown on me since the pilot. I don't like how predictable some of it is, and that's coming from someone that didn't really watch any Star Trek series.

I must be easy to entertain, because I liked the episode, plot holes and all. Reminded me of TOS with some modern twists. The effects in this show are amazing for TV!

I want what you guys are smoking when you watch this show, to me it's a total dud. Sorry.
It's scifi . . . well, sorta. It's like pizza. Even bad pizza is still pizza and when you live out in the boonies where they think crackers with ketchup and cheesewiz is pizza, just about anything that resembles real pizza is like manna from heaven.

@Charmonium , I feel what you are saying. I guess I'd rather go hungry in this instance than eat what seems more like a crap sandwich than a ketchup covered cracker.

@Jon-T , I don't think my expectations were high, I just want to be entertained. If humor is going to be so lowbrow that it practically insults my intelligence, I'd like it to at least be funny. Most of it just fell flat for me. I'd rather watch a rerun of almost any Star Trek series than this.

OK, they just showed the greatest practical joke in history on tonight's episode...
That was probably the weakest episode since the premiere just on the basis that it was trying too hard at some points and not hard enough at others. But I still enjoyed it, both because I didn't see the time travel hook coming, and because I can appreciate when the solution to a problem is an "antique" power drill.😛

And yes, that was a great practical joke.😀

I spent most of the episode trying to figure out how the f*** they got Charlize Theron to do a cameo for this POS. You know it's not the money and I can't believe it's for Macfarlane. I wonder if she's a closet scifi geek. That would be wild.

Anyway, back on topic. This show is sort of the vienna sausages of scifi. It's kind of tasty but it's still basically spam in a can. There's not a lot of originality, not much flavor and it leaves you hungry after watching it but it's still something to eat.
