In any Enterprise incarnation. Remember when the Excelsior captain was laughing at the supposedly inferior Enterprise (The Search for Spock)? Why would you have an inferior, outdated ship as the flagship?

Ummm, in ST-III I thought that the Excelsiur sp? was the new flagship as the Enterprise was being decomissioned. The Excelsiur was bigger, faster, and more powerful than the NC1701

At that time the Excelsior was just a prototype, the Constitution class was the most current in prodcution ship.

Its possible that after the Excelsior finsihed testing it could have become the flagship, the USS Sovereign was renamed USS Enterprise-E after it completed trial runs.

yeah, the transwarp drive/engine didn't work. so it was eventually given traditional warp engines instead.

I believe it remained in service for the better part of a hundred years (in the books). The Enterprise was a different ship of the same class ( B that is)

That's right, b/c wasn't "Captain" Sulu at the helm of the Excelsior in ST-VI ??

Sulu was captain of the Excelsior. Enterprise B made it's debut afterwards in Generations. That is where Kirk was supposedly killed on it's shakedown cruse (I can't believe I know all this trivia).

Just like the USS Galaxy was the first Galaxy Class Starship, and the Enterprise NCC-1701-D, while not the first Galaxy Class Starship, was the flagship of the fleet, the 1701-B, while not the first Excelsior Class Starship, still became the flagship.

Excelsior was a test bed for transwarp drive, unfortunately it didn't pan out properly.

A constitution class is faster and not as well armed, while the excelsior is significantly slower and has a better armament. It was a trade off pretty much, I don't know. Remember the Galaxy Class starship wasn't the best in TNG, bigger and badder ships were being made.
