Im having an argument with my roommate because he thinks that Star Trek sucks and that only wierdos watch it :disgust: He is sticking with his statements despite the fact that three of his roommates watch and are fans of the Star Trek genre (especially TNG). When confronted for the cause of his hatred toward Trek, he says no reason in particular and that "he just doesnt give a $hit" about the show. Now this kid is not some artys fartsy type of person, he is an EE major, knows a good amount about computers (built his own rig, although with the help of a trekkie :D ), and he says he likes sci-fi "but just not that"

But he doesnt seem to understand Star Trek kind of epitomizes(sp?) the sci-fi genre. Oh, btw he has never seen an episode of Trek or a Trek movie , so his whole argument/judgement is just prejudgement that he seems to have towards the show because it might have been or is uncool to admit being a Trek fan :(. So I wanted to find out how many of you like/hate Trek.

Star Trek, although I enjoy watching it, is just another fantasy world that will never be. Mankind is destined to live and die on this rock we call Earth.

The Klilngons, Romulans, Ferengis and, you know, the ones with the pointy ears, are roaming throughout the galaxy having a good time playing space wars with each other.

Do you see my point? Can't you just reach out and grasp it? If we earthlings go into space to colonize, rape and kill we will become just like them.

When UPN took off Voyager at 12 AM my life was ruined because I have been watching it before I go to bed for the past 3 years and now that it's not on I don't know when to go to bed anymore.

I was scared when TNN stopped playing TNG at 11 PM but they brought that back so that is what I am doing right now.

That's about as narrowminded as the folks who laughed at the idea of ever going into space or to the moon before we launched our first space program. Of course the future won't necessarily be just like the ST world but I wouldn't say that something similar will never be or that we will never go beyond this planet.

Rodenberry's world view as depicted in the ST world is rather utopian. So yeah, I sort of agree with you here. It would be nice to think that the human race would eventually elevate itself to the nobel, non-violent, benevolent spirit of the people in ST, but I doubt there will ever be that kind of change. We will probably treat other life on other planets the same way our ancestors treated the natives of conquerd lands.

Star Trek is cool but I'm not a freak... pretty damn close though....

last week my four year old, in a commanding voice, said "Make me some hot chocolate Number One!"

I don't know... you be the judge... she thinks Farscape is to scary....

Before I started watching sc in Jr High, I thought the show was dumb too. I remember what made me hate the show was
all the dumb looking customs and lovely human looking aliens with too much playdo on their face.

Then one day I got bored and saw my first episode of STNG on late night.
That episode happened to be the one when Q sent their spaceship to where the borg where. Was an awesome episode of course, and I decided to give ST some more chance and soon realize that the writings for show rocked mainly because Patrick Stewart is an awesome actor.

We can always hope...

I'm just waiting for replicators and holodecks. :) Who cares about society when we can play Unreal Tournament XXIV on a holodeck and say "double bacon cheese burger, fries, and 44oz diet coke 5 degrees celcius" and have it appear..... chuckle...
