holy.. 'ice_age_collision_course' is only 15%?! 😱

wow.. I wonder how they F'ed this franchise sooooo badly?

Heh. American Express emailed me a chance to go see an advanced screening of this. Uh, no thanks.

I'd be all over an advance screening of Star Trek Beyond though. Now at 91% at RT (35 reviews) with an average rating of 75/100, or 71/100 at Metacritic (16 reviews). Of those 16 reviews at Metacritic, only one is (just barely) below 60, which works out to 15/16 positive reviews or 94%.

I'm also looking forward to Simon Pegg's screenplay. Some of the reviews say it's actually the best out of the three reboot Star Trek movies, and not only is true to the reboot, but suits the original fans better too than the other two. Hope that's true. I liked the first movie well enough and was OK with the second I guess, but more as action movies and not so much as "Trek" movies.

Man, this is actually encouraging. I loved the original reboot, was iffy on Into Darkness, but as much as I enjoy the more action oriented trek, Beyond looks like Fast and the Furious in space, which I was very iffy on. Now I'm looking forward to it much more 🙂.

Got tix for Friday - Star Trek Beyond: An IMAX 3D Experience - dual laser 4k IMAX projectors. Really, really looking forward to this.

I even like the theme music, by Rihanna & Sia & Jesse Shatkin:

Wow. I didn't realize this, because I didn't know their names, but both Sofia Boutella (Kingsman) and Joe Taslim (The Raid) are in it.

Sofia Boutella is a professional dancer who trained for several months in martial arts for Kingsman, and is very convincing as a badass martial arts expert and Samuel L Jackson's bodyguard in the movie. And Joe Taslim is simply a full-fledged badass martial arts expert. If you haven't seen The Raid, you should. It's one of the best martial arts movies in existence.

So it seems there may be a couple of scenes with some hardcore martial arts type moves in Star Trek: Beyond. I guess that shouldn't be surprising since there was a bit in the trailers, but now I know the pedigree of the actors, and it makes more sense.

BTW, it seems if you want to be a female martial arts action star, you should become a dancer first. Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger), Summer Glau (Serenity), Zhang Ziyi (Hero), and now Sofia Boutella are all professionally trained dancers, and not initially trained in martial arts.

The ratings have actually got up a bit to 90%, albeit only with 31 reviews.
Now that the mass reviews are out, it's down to 86%. Which as long as it holds there, I'm happy. I want to see this movie outscore (and outprofit) Into Darkness, so that we can be smug in the superiority of JJ-free Trek.😛

Just saw it. Entertaining but not a master piece. Typical reboot heavy on the action but plot holes

Such as:
How the hell did he become the alien or was he always the alien even in his early days?
Why were their other aliens
Why did he forget about his federation ship
Why did he need the super virus when he clearly had a huge technological advantage?

She was one of Madonna's dancers too, early '00s.

I'll watch the movie early Saturday in 3D. Watched Kingsman-The Secret Service and Raid and Raid 2 in the theaters.

7/10

Better movie than Into the Darkness but short on plot and plot consistency and heavy on action. So good fun summer movie mainly. The beginning was also quite hokey but it redeemed itself later.

Out of the three the first one is the best despite its flaws, with this one second best, and Into the Darkness last. However, the best Star Trek movie of all time remains Wrath of Kahn, and by a significant margin IMO.

About what I expected. Good mix of sci-fi action with some comedy thrown in. I liked it... better than the last one.

One big plot hole but not as bad as stuffing your fellow eugenics super soldiers into torpedoes like Into Darkness did.

Bad guy had a starship that the hero's could get flight/warp worthy in a matter of hours. Instead Badguy spends 100 something years on nebula planet going cyber vampire on people who crash land all while forgetting he had the ship in the first place.

It wasn't a Star Trek movie, but it was a really good movie. Just wish it wasn't Star Trek---I could have seen a story like that being a Mass Effect movie 🙂

Anyway, the ending tribute got me all choked up. The whole audience was crying like a baby.

They couldn't find it...remember?

Saw it last night in a drive in double feature with Ghostbusters for $6. It was good, though I think there is a sense of diminishing returns with each entry. Sad thing is I think I laughed more during Trek then I did during Ghostusters. :\
My only question is what happened to the blonde from Into Darkness? I had hoped she'd be a crew member in this one.

The bad guy wasn't Kirk. Kirk could string together 50 soup cans and ride it into space while blatantly disregarding the lack of oxygen while he did it. Because he's motherfucking James T Kirk.
