Geez. How can you discover something that already has people living on it? That's like discovering someones backyard!!!

Yes but you are forgeting one of the great imports from the Old World . . . claiming you can own the land and everything on it. Many native tribes were territorial to an extent but the primary reason was their understanding that man has to live in balance with nature and that a given area can support a finite number of people.

live in balance with nature? yep, you proved my theory. babydoc is a moron. live in balance. is that why they were nomadic? or was it that they killed EVERYTHING worth eating in a particular area, then left. your skewed version of the real world, however off-base and porrly formed, is funny. all anyone needs for a good laugh is a Babydoc post. keep up the good work.

edit to tone down the flaming, as much i didn't want to tone it down.

The only reason why they got there first is b/c the Chinese rammed Columbus and held him captive for a month.

The old pastures become green again once the tribe has moved on. Where did you hear that they would kill everything worth eating. As I understand it, it was the anglo settlers only who possesed the technology (guns) to do that.

You know the tree byproduct with scribbly stuff and pictures . . . open one some day . . . then ask someone to read it to you. Some native groups were quite nomadic . . . following the herd. Did they kill all of the herd? Of course not b/c no herd no tribe. Eastern and Southeastern US tribes were more likely to establish some degree of agriculture.

Keep it up and I will roll up the paper and smack you . . . HappyPuppy. If Native Americans are so unfathomable as the first humans occupying the continent who is your candidate for being here before Native Americans?

Well where do you think all the indian inhabitants of the americas came from? The are believed to have crossed the bering strait which at one time was connecting the two continents. but that was before my time.

That's the most widely accepted theory but the broader issue is how we live together. If we put the bitter history aside for a moment, some people contend that being 'born American' makes you more worthy than the immigrant naturalized last week. I don't think we want to play that game b/c then some of us with more than a touch of Native American heritage will have to pull rank. We welcome those that want to share in the wealth and opportunity of our country . . . not those that come merely to take whatever they can regardless of the consequences for others.

Our history is replete with 'colonization' and 'civilization' but the land was colonized by early Asians (Siberians) who were nomadic b/c the conditions were harsh. They eventually spread throughout NA/CA/SA. Andean groups became an empire b/c they were some of earliest civilizations with plant cultivation, class distinctions, governments; by 1000-600BC many pockets of civilization existed in Mesoamerica (central) and the Central Andes albeit surrounded by other communities still maintained under chiefdoms.

a little more info on the vikings
Eric the Red was born in Norway but along with his parents he was exiled from Norway. He then came to Iceland and here Leif the Lucky (Lefur Heppni), then they were exiled from Iceland. So they moved to Greenland and I guess Leif didnt like it so he went further and found Newfoundland, I think he called it Vineland because of all the grapes they found. And there the first European was born in America :). Then they got into some problems with the natives so they left and moved to Greenland again. The settlement in Greenland disapeared some years or decades later. Its not known what actually happened but its thought that it was some trouble with the natives. So this family is probably the most disliked family in history ;)
