Any thoughts on this desktop and whether or not it is a good value at this price? I'd like to to update my abacus.

Basic specs:

AMD Athlon II X4 620 quad-core 2.60 GHz
6 GB PC2-6400 DDR2 ram (3x2GB, expandable to 16GB)
640GB 7200 rpm hard drive
Win7 home premium 64 bit
lightscribe DVD burner
integrated video (Nvidia GeForce 9100 256MB
integrated audio. LAN
56k modem (why do they keep tossing these in?)
1 PCI Express 16 available
1 Firewire port, apparently no esata
300 watt psu? (not sure, I have unused 450 and 500 ones sitting around)

I'm not looking for cutting edge, but would like to be able to run modern games at reasonable resolution. Any suggested alternatives for someone who doesn't live near a Fry's, not totally adverse to building a new system.

Looks like a good deal to me. A 300W power supply is fine for that system. If you plan on adding a video card you may need to upgrade it though.

I'm not so sure. Newegg has a Dell 220 (Core 2 D 2.93) for $409, and a Lenovo Core 2 Quad (2.6) for $419 (and free shipping). No tax on these either (as you will pay for the Staples rig). Both have Intel integrated video (3100 and 4500), but feature empty PCI-x slots so you can add a decent vid card (figure $50 to $100).

If you can wait until Christmas, Dell is selling the 220 with Quad Core/Win 7 PLUS a Samsung 24" monitor for $618 (no free ship), but it doesn't ship until 12/17.
