wish that rebate wasn't $50...already have ~$140 in rebates I'm waiting for. Anyone know if this scanner is decent?

Beware of the thin scanners, AFAIK they all use CIS sensors, an LED type of lighting and optical detection that is quite inferior to "normal" scanners. They typically are worse at everything, and perform very poorly at anything that isn't perfectly flat, against the glass.

Then again, I haven't seen output from THIS particular scanner, but I doubt that they've improved much.

Researching this, I don't find a link on Memorex's site showing that they currently make this (they do have half a dozen discontinued scanners).
From the photo it certainly looks like an Artec e+ 48U scanner. Searched the web briefly but didn't find any reviews on either the Artec or Memorex. No review in CNET either. Here is where Newegg sells the Artec - http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.asp?description=38-120-000

Anyone else get this? I'm having problems with it connecting on XP Pro. It gets recognized by the OS but doesn't install the drivers.. I tried grabbing the Artec drivers as well. No luck.

Is there some trick to getting the scanner to work under XP?

Good deal if it works.. lousy deal if it doesn't and I have to return this thing :(

The Memorex is a rebadged Artec e+48U scanner. I picked up a couple of the Artec's at Staples Yesterday as Staples in Lexington, KY didn't have the Memorex models so were subbing the Artec for $69.94 with the $50.00 rebate (better price at least). I can confirm that the document must (MUST) be flat against the glass to get a decent scan. I don't know about XP Pro....I'm using it on XP Home on the Dell 4550. No trouble in that respect.

Good Luck all! :)

These are excellent scanners for the money. They are quiet and make goods scans. The interface is easy for casual users although its unusual that you can't get to all the settings unless you do an acquire from other software. I put about a dozen of the Artecs in small offices that had very limited scannong needs. I just bought one of the Memorex badged ones (FAR and coupons on black Friday) and it seems to be identical. I don't have any problems on XP Pro but I installed the drivers from the link below before attaching the scanner andnever bothered with the CD that was packaged with it. I know with the Artec's the installation instructions have special procedures for XP yet the Memorex instructions don't.

Click here for the Memorex drivers from the ArtecUSA site

OOS in Chicago area.

Customer service said it looks like a discontinued item, so they won't be getting any more in.

The quality is not great, especially on pictures, it is fine for scanning in documents and using OCR, pictures turn out ok, but if you are looking to share High quality pictures I wouldn't recommend this one. For 15 bucks thogh I am happy.

Recieved mine today for $4.95!
Wondering if anyone has tried the E+48U drivers from the Artronix Website. Curious if it works better then the Memorex Drivers.
TIA:)

One of mine arrived today and it is pretty slick, much better than my huge scsi2 model. I think it does pictures just fine even at the somewhat lower resolutions, haven't tried above 600dpi yet.
