Staples: Compaq or HP desktop PC Athlon XP 2600+ w/ 15" LCD for $500

I didn't see a CDRW drive mentioned on the Compaq, just the HP...

Edit: That omission was made on the vendor's web site, but the manufacturer's web site says there is a CDRW drive for the Compaq too.

Staples website on the computer for the Compaq if scroll done the list of items says add'n drive 48x cdrw...so take your pick

How easy arethese to add like a videocard...memory etc...

I get this msg when I try to add the coupon:

Coupon 1

We are sorry. This coupon cannot be applied to an online order. Please remove it from the field below and use it on a store purchase.

Just "helped" a couple friends of mine get in on this deal. Fairly newbish about computers, but they've been price checking so they knew this was a "hot" price, came to me to make sure they weren't being scammed. Local staples had one HP and one Compaq...I'd hit the stores for this deal personally. One compaq one left at the Staples in Mt. Vernon, OH 🙂

Just talked to the sales dept on the compaq. It is available but you have to take the configuration that is shown and then call the sales dept and let them apply the coupon! The girl told me that it was not working via the website. Price is $499 + tax, and I can't remeber if there was shipping or not....Still not a bad deal. Maybe not hot but warm to mild...

My sister picked up one of these and it seems like a good deal all around. For a budget gaming machine, just add a 5200 or a ATI 9600SE card and a $20 80gb 7200rpm hard drive and you're rocking!

warning though...Compaq/HP forgot to update XP to block the worms floating around and Norton is only good for 60 days. My sis got a virus with in the first day of being online. Went to have her rebuild it and no recovery CD's. She had to make her own...so off to Walmart she went to buy a pack of 5...but that wasn't enough..needed like 8. Got it rebuilt and had her download the updates first...and now she's up and running. If she wasn't over 2 hours away and/or a little more computer savy...I would have walked her thru the removal, but rebuilding was much easier...at least once she made the cd's.

has anyone tried the monitor?when i scroll with mine all the text gets darker and blur-ie tends to bleed, also everything seems so small and grainy.think i will go back to my 19'' crt. my wife does not like it either.

Monitor seemed ok to me. Maybe not super hot, but pretty warm considering the cheapest 15" LCD screen I saw was ~ $240. That leaves you $260 for the rest. All-in-all, for those folks (i.e. non enthusiasts) this was maybe even a hot deal, especially if you are limited for desk space (monitor and keyboard fit comfortably on a traditional desk).

Wow good looking out. Especially for those who wanted to remove some of the crap for a lower price. That is hot!
