This reminds me of the days when I worked at staples like 2-3 yrs ago. In our area they offered a $20 off of $20 coupon to all the politicians and higher ups in the area. Us employees found the code, yeah I used the coupon over 20 times for stuff like cd-rs and anything $20.xx cents. A shrink prevention guy came in because he found our store was short like $800 because of the coupon. I was like oh wow I didn't think there was anything wrong to using it over and over. hahahaha Everyone else around me got fired while I laughed the whole way back to work the next day.

I wish I could have gotten in on this coupon oh well. :(

Well, I got a voice mail saying that my coupon was invalid. In addition, they are saying that since the product has already shipped, they will be charging the additional $50 to my card. I guess the joke will be on them when they find out it was a one time use CC number. Can anyone tell me if they can legally do anything to me now? They cant charge me, and the item is shipped

I don't believe they can legally charge you. The item shipped and they caught you after. That's like buying a new car off the lot and tomorrow the dealer calls you and says, BTW i forgot to mention, we have an extra $5000 to add on to that, so we'll roll it into your loan for you!

eh, not a good example but nonetheless they can't do that sh!t!

Did your message say they will charge you if you don't refuse the shipment? That's what's being reported on FW. And yes, by them saying this they can charge you.

yet another person that doesn't know what they're talking about.

How was it Staples mistake? This coupon was never publicly released. This coupon was not leaked by a Staples employee. This was an internal code for Staples use ONLY. If you want to know how it came about being posted, why don't you pm the op on FW.

I don't think it's bad business to blacklist the customers who are fraudulently using coupons.. (oh wait... it's not fraudulent use of coupons, since they're posted on FW, that must mean they're okay for everyone to use??) I doubt they make much money from the people who typically use such coupons - no big loss to blacklist them. If you actually think that grabbing a $50 off anything coupon from some website and using it is ethical in even the slightest way, then, in my humble opinion, you're just one more scum bag in a world already filled with too many of them.

Flame away.

Legal advice

They can't add it to the loan, however they can charge you for the correct amount (which staples can do to you). In many states there are buyer's and seller's remorse laws to protect both businesses and consumers. This issue here is the concept of "unjust enrichment" and therefore they can charge you for what is "fair" because there isn't a "meeting of the minds" when the transaction took place. If you don't think its "fair", then it becomes a dispute and you can either take the hit of full charge or take it up legally. Since this code was not issued to you (a printout of the database records and other internal documents can prove that), you have no case and a summary judgement will straighten you out.

In sum there really is no risk here, since both parties are considered to be in pari delicto (you for unconscionably using a code not issued to you, and them for processing it and charging you). However, if and when they charge you don't go bitching around saying how bad they are etc. because a reasonable person would've realized that this was a mistake. On the other hand, if they don't charge you then you've made $50 on bad terms (for which they may blacklist you); nevertheless that's still $50 made.

Hope this straightens out the issue.

I got the same email too. I called to cancel the order but the rep said it's too late. She said the order was approved.
Is it possible the staples will charge the extra $50 later on?

Obiviously this coupon was released to the public because THE PUBLIC has it. If it's not valid, why the hell does their website accept it!? And another thing...
I recieved my order this afternoon at 1pm. I recieved the email at 3:50pm. The problem: I've already opened and am using the product. The upc has already been cut out and mailed in with the rebate. Im out of town this next week so if they want it back, they're going to have to wait, come pick it up, and deal with it not having a UPC. :D

Geez, not another one :disgust:

WHO released the coupon? It wasn't Staples. It was released to the public by the op on FW that "found" the coupon.

Why did their system accept it? Because the coupon went "live" on April 1st FOR CSR'S USE ONLY!
