Stange voltage/temperature problem...

I just noticed the other day that my motherboard was running my C2 at 1.97v and that the temperature on my BH6 was 55 degrees Celcius. I assumed that this was an error by Sisoft Sandra since I had the C2 set to 1.8v and the highest I had ever seen my motherboard run was 33 degrees celcius.

I checked the bios and it was set to 1.8, but it too was reading 1.97v and it was running 45 degrees Celcius after being turned off for 12 hours. I am not sure if I believe the temp, but something is wacky. I have now set my C2 to 1.7 volts in bios (a setting in which it crashes) and it is running fine. However, both my bios and SiSoft report that the voltage is really 1.86v.

Is my motherboard starting to get flaky? How could it be 45 degrees celcius on boot up? I assume that it is accurate because it is also reporting extremely high voltages that are correct as they are in line with what I need for stability even when it is set to voltages that are below what I need for stability.

Any ideas on how to trouble shoot this one??

PS I know it is summer and that things run hotter in the summer, but I tested everything this morning when it was quite cool in here and the heat and voltage issues are the same.

My advise is not to believe what Sisoft Sandra says. If the CPU runs fine, don't bother about what is says. My comp is AMD K6-III, with DFI K6-BV3+ mobos. SiSoft Sandra 99 reported that my core voltage is 2.45. Actually I set it at 2.4. I was counfused, but I decided to play a bit with the voltage. I tried to increased it to 2.5, and then decreased it to 2.3, but still Sisoft reported it as 2.45. And my fan is running at 4600 RPM, but SiSoft reported it as running at 8888 RPM. If your motherboard comes with power monitor software, better to stick with that one.

Lets try it again (this is a hardware forum, isn't it??):

Any ideas on what the problem could be? I started the machine up again today - booted into the bios and checked the temp - it read 44 degrees celcius. I don't think it is possible for a motherboard to get that high within 5 seconds of operation so I am thinking something with the monitoring software is toast.

Make sure nothing is blocking your ventilation - in or out. Also, if you get too ticked, open the case and touch the darn thing! That should let you kow quicklike what the deal is. If it is warm or cool to the touch then you probably have a hw monitor issue. If that sucker is hot - maybe a voltage regulation problem or something.

Yeah - I have been running with the case off for a couple of days now since I discovered the problem. When I discovered the problem I felt the CPU heatsink, the vid card heatsink and back of the chip, and the motherboard heatsink. The video card was the only one that felt really hot (it was running in the 140's).

I am starting to think that the monitoring hardware might be whacked since all the sudden the numbers are within spec again and the system feels the same.

Very strange indeed...

I noticed that one a few Abit boards the CPU Voltage varied a lot compared to otherboards. Always normally over what they were set to. But never did any harm. Although most of them boards are dead now actually 😉.
