Standby

Do any of you guys know how to "force" a computer to stay on standby? I mean, any mouse movement brings it out of standby, but is there a way to disable that? Cos it's really annoying when it randomly wakes itself up when I am not using it (say, someone's footsteps cause the mouse to tremble a little). I put it on standby by pressing the "snooze" button on my keyboard. I would like to set it up so it only comes out of standby if I press the "snooze" button on my keyboard again. I am running Win XP Home.

Open the mouse properties dialog in control panel, click hardware, click properties, click power management, uncheck allow this device to bring computer out of standy.

I have found the mouse is not always the culprit. On my machine, the service that checks for downloads from digital cameras and scanners and the like will check every once in a while to see if anything is connected and wakes up the machine. I don't remember the name of the service offhand but it can be very annoying.

Might this be what you are talking about?

There's no power management option in the Hardware / Properties screen...

Must only be for USB meeces then. Try a USB mouse (HID - Human Interface Device) or get an optical mouse which isn't subject to the movement issue as much.

No, I think it's an issue with my PC cos I even checked the Microsoft website to see what they had to say. They suggested your method as well, and no mention of only USB. There must be some power management features not installed on my installation of XP.

You say that optical mice are less prone to over-sensitive movements? Cos I am thinking of upgrading and that might be a worthwhile purchase.

I had that problem on an older system. I just turned the mouse over, and problem solved.

On my current system, there is an option in the BIOS called "USB Wake-Up" from S3. I set it to disabled, and my computer only wakes up when I want it to.
