Standby mode not available in Win XP system

Working with an older motherboard, an ECS K7SEM. I originally used this system with Win 98SE and, IIRC, it would go into Standby mode in the normal way.

In Sept. 2004, I transferred the computer to my nephew, a college student. He bought Win XP and Office 2003 at academic pricing and installed them. He recently bought a new hard drive and asked me to install it. I have his OS CD and the Office 2003 CD. I installed the new hard drive, installed Win XP SP2, upated some drivers, and got some OS updates via Windows Updates.

Device Manager looks good; all devices working properly. However, Standby mode is not available. Hibernation is present. I've looked at BIOS settings and tested a few changes to settings, but still do not have Standby capability. However, I can go into Power settings and set the monitor to go off after a certain time.

Here's something that might be significant. In Device Manager, the first item shown is Computer. If I expand it to show the specific name, it simply says "Standard PC". By comparision, my main computer shows "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC". If I try to update the driver for "Standard PC", the Hardware Update Wizard says it cannot find a better driver.

Edit: here's another point that might be significant. When I open the Properites panel for Standard PC, I see 4 tabs (General, IRQ Steering, Driver, and Details). On my own computer, I do not see the tab named IRQ Steering. Also, if I click on the Details tab, I see ROOT\PCI_HAL\0000. On my own PC, I see ROOT\ACPI_HAL\0000.

The problem is that it's using the Standard PC HAL. Which if I recall correctly does not support Standby in Windows XP. I think in Win2k it supported standby though, not 100% positive.

WinXP more strictly adheres to the ACPI standard and that motherboard doesn't meet all the criteria needed to use the ACPI HAL.

OK, Mike. Thanks for that info. Looks like we'll just have to accept it as it stands.

he probably disabled ACPI in BIOS. since you installed with ACPI off, it used the PCI HAL. re-install with ACPI on, and it will work fine.

Nope, didn't work. No change. Looks like mikecel79 was right; it isn't going to work.
