Standard screen resolution?

I'm making a website. I know, I've been taking my sweet, sweet time (I'm new at this - throw me a bone), but everything's fleshed out, except for one thing - I don't know the standard screen resolution!

I remember it being 800x600 a few years back - and I'm pretty sure not many are at or above 1600x1200, but I'm stuck between 800x600 and 1024x768 - your opinions?

edit: fixed to the correct resolution

it's 1024 not 1078, 768 not 728. 1600x1200 would be a bad choice. very few people use that res or even can use that res. Everyone can use 1024x768, although I belive 800x600 is the standard.

I don't know where the hell you got "1078x728" from - the resolution is 1024x768. 😛

As far as standard resolution...what is the audience for this website? Most of the people I know, even on slower P3-era computers, are on 17" CRT's at 1024x768. I'm not sure that a whole lot of people use 800x600 anymore, although I could be wrong...

Oops, sorry. I thought you were asking about our resolution. I should have read the thread before voting 🙂. Ignore that 1600x1200 vote.

1280x1024 is the native resolution for MANY LCDs on the market out today. I would probally consider that the new standard.

Depends on the target audience... if they are likely techies, then 1024x768 is safe. Otherwise, I'd still stick to 800x600.

The most common resolution that I see is 1280x960 . Most people I know use that, or 1280x1024 for widescreen.

Just don't make your webpage auto size to fit, I can't stand when websites do that.

800x600 used to be the standard, but really I think we've moved past that.

1024x768 is what the average person uses these days, and everyone elses resolution is usually higher, not lower, that that.

Yeah, me neither: my buddy, who's into, and only into programming, does that because it's a tech-dork thing . . . of course he's no designer . . ..

(Like I am; just call me "mr. pot"😛)

Since when is 1280x1024 widescreen? 😕

There is no standard screen resolution. And more people are surfing the internet on handhelds with really low resolution screens than ever before...

Being a developer who deals with many schools, I've still got to design for 800x600. It's not a problem though, most of the time people dont have enough content to take advantage of 1024x768 anyways.

Website design resolution should have almost nothing to do with standard screen resolutions. My web browser is never maximized. That said, I usually have the screen set to 1920x1440, and the browser window is probably about 1024 wide, but a lot more than 768 tall. Always make the page tall, not wide -- vertical scrollbars aren't anywhere near as annoying as horizontal.
