Standard PCI device compatible with PCI Express?

I posted this question in other thread but it was like on 3rd page so I thought it would be better to ask in a new thread. It's a really stupid question.

I wanted to know if Standard PCI cards (sound cards, LAN/wireless cards, USB/Firewire adapters, etc.) can be plugged into PCI Express slot. Are PCI Express port backward compatible?

I ask this question b/c I am stuck on which motherboard to buy. DFI Lanparty nF4 SLI-DR or MSI K8N Neo4/SLI. DFI has only 2 standard PCI ports where MSI has 3. My decision is pending on this question ('cause I will have Audigy2 ZS and TV Tuner card so that will already use up 2 PCI ports on DFI. That leaves no room for future expansion.)

Also, if you guys have preference on which board is better let me know that as well.

No, they're complete different -_-; Don't even try, as you'll probably break something. You could always buy a Radeon AIW with an integrated TV Tuner to save some space...

The DFI is a bit better for overclocking, but the MSI runs faster at stock, from what I've heard.

Worky just fine! I installed two Matrox G450 Dual Video (PCI) cards in my new Dell Dimension 4700 last night. Put both of them in the PCI Express 1x slots. Installed just fine and now I have access to five monitors - two on each card and one via the onboard video. Can't wait to trade stock with this setup!:thumbsup:

not sure what they are talking about...NO PCI card can fit in a x1 slot...no way...

either the MSI or the DFI are great choices...

Can I have some of the crack you're smoking? PCI e x1 slots are WAY shorter than normal PCI slots. Hopefully you're just confusing the fact that your mobo has an x16 slot for graphics and some regular old school PCI slots for backwards compatability.

Do you see the small slot near the CMOS battery.......That's the PCIe 1x slot. The blue and black are two PCIe 16x slots. The rest are regular PCI slots.

Thanx, Biostud, for setting me straight. The specs of the Dimension listed the mobo as having 1 PCI 16x and two 1x cards. They ARE regular PCI slots as evidenced by their size (and etching on the mobo.) Thanx for the pics.

I would like to thank BobDaMenkey for his informative "smoking crack" comment. Very helpful and professional. Keep up the great work. I was, in fact, confused. (Why does everyone smoke crack on this forum?)
