I've been toiling with a five-year-old Panasonic DVD changer for far too long. It can't play CD-R or RW, and is really picky about DVD-R media -- only Riteks seem to work consistently.

I want (preferably) a changer with CD-R capability. Hopefully, it can play whatever's thrown at it, although I generally use high quality CD/DVD media. The cheaper the better, but it has to have decent video audio outputs (optical audio out is a must, video.. welll my TV kind of sucks, but maybe I'll upgrade later)

Any suggestions? I know I'm asking a lot... but please help, maybe as a gift for my 1000th post
:)

Gah... I had an Xbox awhile ago.. thought it would be the end all be all... wouldn't play CD-R. I know you can swap out the drive for a Samsung, use XBMP, etc.. but even then, the interface was too complex... This player will be used by the whole family, and most of them can barely figure out how to play a DVD.

My Apex died after 3 years of faithful service. I'm using my XBOX now.

I replaced the old Thompson drive (was going bad) with a Samsung drive I bought on Ebay.

It seems "ghetto" to use the XBOX as a dvd player, though. Still getting used to the idea.

Apex *shudder* it seems "ghetto" to hookup a $25 player to my nice home theater. I'm no home theater nut, but do these Apex players stand up? Namely, optical out? Dolby/DTS?

Damn, where'd you find one for $25? I paid $35 for mine ;)

Ok so maybe the Apex was just as ghetto as the XBOX is now.

At least there isn't any tin foil on my antenna.

not really sure but I regret purchasing my samsung dvd player since it can't be made region free

If I was getting dvd player, I would make sure it can be hacked into a region free player, on top of everything else you need

Pioneer is best dvd player decks... period. Just review models at http://www.videohelp.com and choose the ones that plays all the formats and has a good rating. My pioneer dvd player can play vcd/svcd cd-r cd-rw dvd+r dvd-r dvd+rw dvd-rw. mp3, wma, cd audio, dvd audio, never had problems with it, and it has awesome scratched disc reading, it just blows right through a scratch no freezing or anything.
