is it a set script they totally memorize? or do they just remember jokes and then improvise the order they tell them?

I would think most of them are set scripts, its easier to work that way. Improvisation takes a quick mind and alot of talent.

I remember someone asking Jerry Seinfeld this question a long long time ago. From what I remember he has so many that he can kinda choose, but he rehearses, and prepares what jokes he is going to use ahead of time for the show. He also mentioned about segues, meaning one joke would lead to another, then another.

I think they have a general idea of where they're going to go with things and the general order of jokes and stuff, but they do a bit of improvising, I'm sure.

I'm sure 99% of them go up with at least a rough outline of what they're going to do, this topic, this joke to lead to this, you can kind of tell the ones that memorize though, at least the ones that I would guess memorize the whole thing, its stiffer and doesn't flow so easily, either that or they're just not as good at improving the segue, I don't know, I just know I'd be terrible at it.

You've seen Paublo Fransisco doing the same act over and over and over again.
