Stand By problem...

I am running Windows XP Pro right now and I have it set to automatically go into standby but what happens is it will go in and out of it perfectly fine the first time, but it will simply stop afterwards at the preparing to stand by screen whether it was initiated automatically or manually. I've gotten to work fine before but don't know what the proble is now, and I haven't changed the BIOS settings or anything like that.
