Stand alone software MP3 player, does it exist?

My work is pretty strict on installing apps on your computer so I am looking for a decent mp3 player that can be run from just an .exe. Any suggestions? It does not need to be fancy, I just want it to display ID3 tags, read/write playlists, and run standalone.

Windows Media Player should be on your work PC already, that should do the trick. VLC Portable should also work.

WMP, for whatever reason, is not working correctly. It's version 9 and I can't update farther as we use Win 2k on all the workstations except for a few xp boxes. I can't get wmp 9 to show current tracks in the playlist and the playlist editor is not working at all.

I believe foobar is portable. Uncheck per-user settings during the install. I think you'll first have to install it on a PC you have full rights to, then copy the folder to your work PC.

You should not be trying to circumvent the policies at work, ESPECIALLY not by importing your own standalone apps. It's likely you're going to be found out. Where I used to work, you'd be tripping the ol' VirusScan Enterprise behavior-blocking rules, which I'd see in ePO Console every time I looked (several times a day).

Even if I.T. doesn't find you out, the AnandTech mods do not smile upon asking for assistance to bypass security on someone else's computer or network. Instead, ask I.T. nicely if dude, can I pleeeeeze have the next WinXP box that gets freed up? I want the newer WMP! 🙁

I am not circumventing anything, I have the full blessing of the TSG (it guys) if I can find a stand alone player that does not need to be installed. I usually play by the rules but I do thank you for your concern. Also I don't want the next winxp box as those tend to be desktops. I love my T42.

And thanks to everyone for the suggestions, the stand alone winamp really interests me. I'll have to give it a try.

Well, first off I dislike ipods which is why I have a 40gb zen touch that has served me well for years. The problem is I am too lazy to use the crappy software it came with to take off the current 8000 songs and reload it. It's easier just to burn a DVD with a few mp3's that I want to listen to 🙂

I'm not sure what they worry about, all I know is we have an uber firewall (it is a 450,000+ employee company) and do a good job keeping the net secure. Winamp won't be able to access the web or anything outside of the network without the it guys given it permission. Nothing comes and goes without there express consent... it's kinda annoying.

I'm just looking for a basic app that plays mp3's better than the nuetered version of WMP 9 I have on my laptop. I am going to give a few of these a test at home and see what I like.

Firewalls mean nothing when folks bring their own 'stuff' inside and run it. MS Blaster penetrated some of the best firewalls on the planet on laptops that attached to those company networks. Alternate media works too including exploited media files.

Get a Zen, Zune, or IPod. The other 449,999 folks will not miss you if someone takes note and shows you the door.

*sigh* You'll forgive me if I trust my own IT guys over the people here on what will and will not effect the companies network. We cannot use wireless on any machine even with a RSA token due to "security issues", they are that paranoid.

Besides, what I am specifically looking for is a stand alone mp3 player. They key work there is "alone" as in not contact with the outside world and it does not need to be installed. I have enough trust directed at me that they have made me a local admin on my box, I know what I should and should not do. This is the reason I planned to test all the reccomended programs on my home desktop over the weekend in an unconected enviroment watching what it's trying to do. I'm sure one of these has to be a safe program that just plays mp3's without doing anything else.

I really think you guys are taking this a little too far. I understand the need for security, especially in my position with the data I am handling. What I also understand are the issues that IT people (which I'm sure many of you are) have to deal with, especially stupid users who try their best to thwart your security. I know I'm probably coming across as one but please believe me when I don't have any desire to hurt the companies network or expose our data.

I just want a simple self contained program for playing MP3's and have the IT guys permission to find one.

Out of curiosity, did they make your domain account a local Admin to your system, or did they just give you the password to your local Admin account? You're not going around with Admin powers for mere daily-driver usage, right?
