Stalled My Car in High Water Today [UPDATE 2]

Today, I was driving down one of the main streets in Baton Rouge (Sherwood Forest Blvd for ppl familiar w/ the area). It started raining really hard and the streets rapidly filled w/ water. I was looking ahead and saw the water was very high. I decided to pull off at a business and wait for the water to go down.

As I was pulling to a side street, a car almost hit me. I had to slam my breaks. When I went to hit the gas, my car stalled. Went to crank it....no go. Had to get it towed to the dealership.

Now I'm stuck w/out a car until probably Monday afternoon (no rental places open when it happened). It pisses me off cause i've inadvertantly gone through deeper water before w/ no problems.

Anway, anyone have experiences like this? I'm just wondering what the best/worst case scenario is. I'm not sure if water went in the muffler or CAI or both. All my electronics were still working; the car just wouldn't crank. I am still covered under my bumper-to-bumper warranty and have full coverage insurance, but am unsure if either will cover the costs to fix it.

What a day...what a day :|

[UPDATE]

The dealer examined my vehicle and determined there was no engine damage. Three sensors were damage, however (MAF, etc). They have estimated $700 to fix the vehicle.

I went ahead and filed a comprehensive claim, so I probably won't get my car back until next week. While waiting, I get to drive around in a 2004 Prius.

[UPDATE 2]

It ended up being $747 for parts and labor (3 sensors). The rental was $203 (w/ insurance each day). My overall cost will end up being $570.

I've lost interest in modding, so I will probably pull the CAI out and put the stock intake back in it. I may just get the bypass valve...but probably not.

As far as the car is concerned: it is handling like it was before. If something else goes wrong, I hope it happens in less than 8 months (bumper-to-bumper ends)...

I dont know for sure but you better hope that the air intake is not in the front fender well, if it is you are in the world of new engine.

hydrolocked.... youre fvcked and chances are the dealer wont pick up the bill because of the intake. CAIs are stupid and theres virtually no gainhp gain compared to normal cone intake

Yea they'll probably blame the CAI.
Do you still have your factory intake/box ?

it's gonna take one dumbass hyundai mechanic to see a hydrolocked engine and dry oem airbox and not figure that out...but you never know... :p

LOL. It wouldn't bother me so much if it didn't happen on one of the busiest streets in Baton Rouge. I was trying to get up on dry land and failed miserably...

Well, in all honesty, the whole scenario is kinda vague.

If your intake was below water level, your engine would've quit the moment it became submersed, and if it was just idling, it probably wouldn't have sucked very much if any water up.

I am perhaps guessing that the intake was partially submerged, and when you stepped on the gas, it sucked just enough water up to extinguish combustion, but not enough to actually hydrolock your engine.

If you got lucky, that is.

when you say "went to crank it .. no go" do you mean you turned the key and nothing happened? or do you mean the engine turned but wouldn't catch?

thats not true btw. some cais are quite good.

anyways if ur cai is lower than your stock airbox in terms of entrance to the air you can be sure the dealer will deny warranty service if its hydrolocked.

I was on the highway....I looked ahead and saw many people going through deep water. Instead of taking the same risk, I was going to pull into a restaurant and wait for the rain to quit.

The water where I was at was high, also. I turned to a side street (same water level) Then, I went to accelerate into the parking lot. A car was coming out of the restaurant and I had to hit my brakes. When I went to hit the gas again, it died almost instantly. no spitting or sputtering.

I opened the car door and looked at the water level. None of the body was submerged but it was close. The muffler may have been under, but the CAI is high enough to where it should've never been submerged.

Sorry I'm not being more clear about it. I'm just wonder what the hell I'm going to do if the engine is fvcked. I do have full coverage, but i'm not sure if this is covered. I will have to call on Monday.

also, the reason I have a CAI is because I was in the process of changing that out, headers, etc. I was going to rice it out (minus stickers and racing fin). I've been too busy and haven't had a chance to finish it up...

As much as I don't want to laugh...that's pretty funny :)

Should sue Hyundai for false advertising... They show the Tiburons swimming in water!

That happened to my car during TS Allison. I had to abandon it before I drowned. It was a complete loss. :(

Edit: By the way, you can buy my Festiva if you can't get your car fixed. ;)
