Well, I don't know - the last game I mucked around with prior to STALKER used a profile with AFR2 SLI rendering + 16x SLI AA, due to manually activated nhancer profiles overwriting the global profile they are the settings nhancer used when I installed and ran it. Perhaps the SS component of SLI AA helps even when there is no accompanying MSAA?

No form of external AA appears to work with Stalker, not even pure super-sampling modes like 2x2.

I play at 1680x1050 and no AA and aliasing is not bad at all. Far better than say CS S without AA.

And even tho u have a 8800GTS, maybe u should try high instead of Maximum settings to see if there is any difference!

It is more than playable at the above res on high on my X1950 Pro 512mb.

I'm starting to think its an NVIDIA issue. Most of the people saying they have no problems have ATI cards. :(

That did help some, but there was a noticable drop in graphics quality and I was still getting FPS drops into the 30s.

How are other people with 8800GTXs running this?

EDIT: Seems I'm not the only one with problems: http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=32908

Okay, these settings seem to run alright on my 8800 GTS:

1920 x 1440
Dynamic lighting (objects only).
16xAF control panel.
AA off.
Shadow detail minimum.
Grass shadows off.

Everything else is maxed/on including all of the distance sliders.

It doesn't run as well as static lighting but it does look better and still seems to run okay for the most part.

How are other people with 8800GTXs running this?
It's possible you're less tolerant of a low framerate than others are. I get this all the time. ;)

Also turn off vsync if you haven't already done so.

The performance hit is colossal (unplayable) when I combine it with sun shadows.

With my settings I can leave sun shadows on which make a bigger visible difference than going from object dynamic -> full dynamic.

i play with sun shadows and FDL :)

i would hate to be w/o sun shadows ... otoh, grass shadows are pretty unnecessary with my grass density so low :p

and i am *done* with STALKER ... since the weekend

i really like that game ... bring on the expansion

into Shivering Isles now ... with Armed and Dangerous as a 'standby' and RE4 with a controller 'on deck'

S.I. is really exceptional with everything maxed ... even grass density
story is better [so far] 'n Oblivion's MQ also

Did you patch Shivering Isles from that game-crippling bug they found last week?

Which drivers?

100.65 and now 101.70

I've never measured FPS but it's smooth.
