Sorry to say it, but in an "Emergency", the last thing they're gonna worry about is that ring. Your finger can sustain quite a bit of damage and survive anyway. I am sure that they would submerge your finger in ice to limit the swelling, probably shoot it up with some novocaine and get to work removing it, but it would be removed. Decreased blood flow to your finger is hardly life threatening or requires dire attention, even in an emergency. I think you're far too concerned with this.

My reply was for the question "Stainless Steel Ring : Can it be cut off ?" I never said it would be at a hospital. It could be in his garage for all I care, all I know is that it CAN be cut off if you're careful enough.

i was replying to pipboy who was mocking me because of the idea of whethor or not they have lasers in hospitals.

I will taunt you a second time since they will not have industrial diamonds either.

If things got really bad and they couldn't get it off, wouldn't they just bleed your finger near the base to reduce any swelling?

Magnum375 = Teh Paranoid! :Q <--stop watching me!

You seem to be a bit too worried about "an accidnent." You aren't giving away your personal possession or stopped bathing and grooming, have you?

Are you nuts? If you do break your hand and your ring finger become swollen, just wait until the swelling is gone before removing the ring. wtf is your problem?

actually you have to amputate your finger.
the blood won't flow or something.

There are reasons why they don't let you wear jewerly when you play sports.

I just asked my dad, and he said they have a saw attachment that goes onto the saw they use to cut through bone and casts, that is designed for cutting though misc. metals. He also his group usually uses them for things like construction impalements. So I figure if it can cut through rebar, it can cut through a ring. He also added in many ER's they also have a clamp type device that can warp or bend the steel to get them off. But apparently, both can cause damage in the process... Cutting off fingers is the very last resort, after these two have been used without success and after anti swelling agents and blood letting is tried. The way they see it, either way you will lose a finger, at least if they cut it off, your chances of having it back are better. But these are extreme cases and it is also up to patient to have it put back on or left off...

We used a Gem ring cutter in my ER, it's like a battery powered Dremel with a diamond blade, site even has some Quick time vidos:D

Gem

Never met a ring it couldn't take off, & I've taken off about a dozen...

That answer was so stupid it was almost funny.........guess this one never has seen a finger so swollen that a ring is cutting into the flesh. How on earth one could get a bolt cutter under the ring to cut it is beyond me.

On the other hand, ring cutters have been around for decades. Very elegant tools for the exact job described......cutting off a ring from a finger or appendage without further traumatizing the tissue. Have yet to see a ring the cutters were unable to remove.

But there are not many stainless steel rings.

You mean Carbide or diamond coated endmills can cut that ring off easily.

We've cut more than one stainless ring off...........you'd be surprised what people put on. You must remember there are MANY different grades and Rockwell hardnesses of stainless, and stainless steel used in rings and jewelry is NOT the same stainless used in industrial applications.

FYI, if you ever wanted to cut the thing off yourself, like people mentioned, just use a dremel and go slowly. Get a thicker carbide coated cutting disc, hold your finger down so it won't move, us spray bottle full of ice water to keep you finger cool while someone else cuts. You could probably get the thing off in 5 minutes.

it is easier to just wrap a piece of string around the finger extremely tightly all the way to the tip and then slip the ring off. That is how Emergency rooms do it here, assuming the finger isnt so mangled that this woul dbe impossible.

I have a titanium ring... yeah they can be cut off.... and this is that aircraft grade titanium stuff, so I think its "harder" or at least has a much higher tensile strength than steel. Just grab a dremel
