I found out I'm not the only one with this problem as I found this thread on the exact same issue

Thread

Very strange... here's a pic of my monitor.

I sent it to NEC for repair about 2 months ago and they replaced the plastic silver part around the screen, not sure if they replaced the screen itself. All the RepairReport said was "Scratched-Plastic" and that it was replaced.

Well when I got it back it looked like it was fixed initially, but as the days went on I noticed it more and more until it looked like it did before I sent it in.

Called NEC today to tell them I want to send it in and they said it would have to be replaced by a refurbished unit.

Well now I'm scared I'll get into an endless cycle of sending and receiving monitors till I get one that's good. Ugh...

Has anyone experienced this problem with their monitor, or know what causes it? How did you resolve the issue?

Thanks.

xtnight had similar damage to his monitor from heat AFAIK

at first I thought you were talking about image persistence which goes away when turned off for awhile

I still have it on mine but it got a little better after not using it as much. I did not bother returning or exchanging this. I don't want to end up with anything worse. I'm not sure mine is as bad as yours.

Almost looks like the liquid crystals are spilling around or something but I doubt it's "scratched plastic".

Yep, that's your usual issue that xtknight has and so do I. I've left my monitor off for over a week and it's still there when I turn it back on now. Not really much that can be done, pretty sure you'd need a whole new LCD panel to fix it.

EDIT: Only weird thing about mine... it's not a 'stain' that starts at the top and kinda works it's way down... it's more of a streak across the top. (not the very top though) Very strange.

I heard something about the adhesive that LG Phillips uses for these panels which is easily affected by the heat that causes this stain-like issue. It seems these panels have so many problems...

Well, if it is a heat issue, probably didn't help matters much that I kept my middle speaker on top of the monitor since the day I got it. (about a year ago)

I don't keep the speaker there anymore, I created a temporary fix where it sits about 3 inches above it.

One thing I did was kept the blue screen (or whatever color it shows up well) on all night and in the morning the "stain" isn't visible on the same background. But, then I start using the monitor normally and it returns after about 5 mins.

I thought this might hint at a problem with the liquid crystals.

I had the same problem develop with my 2070NX over the last few months. I've been meaning to RMA it, but I really don't want to go without the monitor for long since all I have spare right now is a smaller and much cruddier TN. 95% of the time I don't notice it, and the rest of the time it's acceptable without really being acceptable if you get what I mean.

The situation is a catch-22. :(

In case anyone stumbles in here looking for info on the problem I thought I'd give an update.

I did RMA the unit (on 6/5/08 I think) and got a refurbished one 6 days ago (6/19/08) and here's the dealio.

No "staining" what-so-ever.

One dead/stuck pixel tucked away in the upper left corner, very tiny and only visible on a black background. I'd never notice it unless I was looking for it.

This unit does seem to suffer from unusually strong image retention that I don't think my last unit had. The strange thing is it's only on the left side of the screen. I noticed when my [black] screensaver came up and I could easily see the desktop icons still on the screen. I then switched my screensaver to a full white screen, previewed it for about 8 sec then switched back to the black screen and the retention was gone. So it goes away very quickly with each new image. Honestly it's really not a problem.

So after toying with it for 6 days now watching out mostly if I notice the image retention during normal operation; which I never have. Even on dark games like F.E.A.R. it wasn't a problem.

Overall I'm very happy I traded up. Thank you NEC!
*crosses fingers hoping the unit doesn't die in a month* :)

Wow thats just awful and obviously defective. I guess I'm luck since I think I was one of the first people to purchase this monitor back in dec 06 and it's still the best monitor I've seen even better than my LCD2490 and I use it everyday.
