Yes they put that rotten egg smell with natural gas on purpose because it is odorless otherwise. Gas detectors are few and far between unfortunately. Many reviews say they don't even work accurately. If it's happening in the basement while you're on the 2nd floor sleeping, that's a problem.
something about those pesky pilot lights in the basement :D

As if concrete won't explode? It will actually be worst, as everything will be contained and continue to bounce around.

And radon gas has NOTHING to do with it (and it does seep THRU concrete)

I'm also not sure where you can find a "solid concrete" building, most have wooden reinforcement/sheetrock etc anyways.

My apt was built in 1948, I am pretty damn sure it could withhold a decent blast. Also, I never said radon was the cause.

A buddy of mine back in high school had his house explode due to a gas leak. Blew up in the middle of the night while everyone was sleeping. He ended up in the neighbors back yard. Luckily they all survived.

STAFFORD — The explosion that blew a house to pieces Tuesday originated in the basement utility room of the structure and was deemed accidental, authorities said.
An investigation revealed that gas was leaking from a 2-inch natural gas distribution main in the street and got into the house at 59 Oak Ave. along a water main line, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.
The gas then built up and ultimately ignited from an open flame, prosecutor's office spokesman Al Della Fave said. The flame is typically a pilot light from a furnace or other utilities commonly in houses.
Initially, police said the house may have been undergoing renovations, but Stafford Township administrator James Moran said that it was not being renovated at the time of the explosion.
The owners of the house that exploded, Mark and Margaret Reynolds, live next door, police Capt. Thomas Dellane said. They could not be reached for comment.

A house blew up a couple years back in the neighborhood where I grew up. Occupant got drunk and fell asleep while smoking. He woke up and saw the fire around his oxygen tanks, so he got the hell out before it blew up.

had a house blow up in my hometown back in the 80's about 4 or 5 block from my house. killed 3 people. if I remember correctly, it was due to running the gas line either in or next to sewer line and the gas line got punctured when the sewer line was being cleaned.

Unrelated...but is your avatar a P61 Black Widow?

Wow. Makes me want to install a methane sensor in the furnace room. Just need to keep it away from the bathroom to avoid false alarms after eating bacon poutine.

I have to have a fancy detector next to all open slotted doors and on every floor of my CO rental.

I bet they did this for insurance money tho.

Yeah explosions are pretty crazy.

This was a grain elevator that exploded a few years back 50 miles NE of Kansas City

I know bigger ones than that have exploded too:

And the Texas fertilizer plant explosion from a couple of years back:

And this one that's been a staple of those "OMG look at this!" shows:

When I first saw this in TV the other day I didn't see the people walking about in the vicinity -- they had to have soiled underwear after that!

The other thing that struck me was how little the fireball was, I mean there almost wasn't any at all. Perhaps the fuel/air ratio was very close to stoic.
