stable FTP Server for Win2k

I'm looking for a stable FTP server to be used under Win 2000 Pro.

I used TypSoft FTP Server and eftp2 but they crashed after some while, i.e. are not stable.

Any suggestions?

serv-u or warftp (not sure war will run under 2k though, but it's probably a tiny bit better than serv-u, which is saying a lot because serv-u rocks.

I demand a recount, this vote is unfair....

No really Serv-U will not disappoint you. It wokrs great and has great help at at their website if you have questions.

Serv-U is not a client. Serv-U was my first attemp at FTPing, but I've move onto G6 which is better than Serv-U.

Another vote for servu. Its handled a multi meg simultaneous downloads off of an IDE drive before.

Did anyone made the following experience with Serv-U? :

download rates from the ftp server are great but suddenly the rate falls down to 0 kb/sec, after a while it is OK, then again slowly ...

some false settings made??
(I used the predefined)

Info: with stable I mean, that the server shall run 24 hours a day and that for weeks and months ...

AND it should not have a problem when my ISP changes my IP ... (some other program I tested, crashed when my old ISDN card dialed in new and I got assigned a new IP.)

than you gotta go with G6 since there's an option where G6 can detect dynamic IP changes every hour or something like that. PM me if need G6 I have it on I-drive right now. My server will stay for months except when I need to reboot for something else.

I have to agree w/IIS; do you ppl claim to now have known that 2k pro includes IIS w/ FTP/Webserver/etc. I have ran the ftp w/no problems. Goto add/remove windows components and install the IIS/ftp.

i've had some weird problems w/ serv-u in win2k that i never had in 98.

i would boot my computer and serv-u would detect my ip at something like 215.249.217.545 (this is not my real ip by the way) when i reboot, sometimes it will give me something like 172.xxx.xx.xxx after rebooting a couple of times, i would get my 215.xxx.xxx.xxx ip back

i have reinstalled serv-u many times....anyone have any idea what's going on with serv-u ???

War-Ftp is great too, but not as easy to setup, IMHO at least.
G6 is also worht looking into and has MANY options. However it's a resource hog and the GUI has not been optimized yet, ie it's slow. I use VNC to administer my win2k/serv-u box from the office/road, so the simply serv-u interface is great since it doesnt bog VNC down......

you guys are joking about the IIS ftp server, right? i just want to make sure. the most stable and most secure?

as far as having the server update depending on whether or not your ip changes, i believe the following line:

ReloadSettings=YES

added into serv-u's .ini file will reload the .ini file every 60 seconds or whatever, so that it will automatically update on an ip change... getting the word out to your users that your ip has changed is another matter...

someone post a link to this G6 thing... i'd like to try it out...

G6. As fas as dynamic goes. G6 will check and see if IP changes every hour or whatever you set it to check. For dynamic IP it would be a pain to update everyone when IP changes it is best to use a DNS services like dyndns.org where you run a client on you comp and when it detects IP changes it updates the DNS server and forward it to your new IP. It's set it up and forget kind of thing. It's the best thing to use but most people don't know about it.

Which FTP servers support "Resume Dowloads" like you get when using Download Accelerator or similar? I am spoiled and no longer like downloading from servers that say they don't support it.

paldo:

in g6, how do you set up a server welcome message that displays once a user has logged in...?
(i like what i see so far, just wondering how secure the program really is. the one thing that was good about warftp is that it was just about the most secure ftp daemon available).

actually, i searched for 2 minutes and already found a pretty serious DOS vulnerability in G6... if someone tries to log in to a G6 server and gives a username with more than 2000 characters, G6 will go into an infinite loop and eat all available resources until the machine crashes...

Messages is the easiest thing to do in G6. Events manager have everything from logged messages to banning hammerrer messages. Are you using Beta? PM me if need a full version.

i was not joking about IIS, I used to work as assistant network admin for a webhosting company, we had all our webservers running IIS and in the 7 months i was there we had 0 crashes, errors, etc. And we pushed 3-10GB a day of transfer(per server, we had 4 webservers). And it is the most secure, if the admin knows what he is doing.

ServU is fine for smaller servers, it won't crash or anything but if you have a high volume server I'd look elsewhere.

WarFTP is what I use though I use it in Win98SE, it's a little more powerful/flexible than ServU and has some nice setup features, but is more or less on the same level, but servU is a little easier to use.

Never used G6 no comment...

IIS isn't to bad really, I'd personally use warFTP just because I'm used to it, but IIS is probably fine to.

Uhh...please..tell me what is wrong with IIS FTP? Anyone? IIS seems less secure because more people attack it. I would have to say that IIS FTP is probably easier to use than the rest of them and with integrated network and NTFS security, I am willing to bet that if properly configured, it is better than any of those other FTP apps out there.
