Stability problems with X800

One of my friens just built a computer and for his graphics card he chose a MSI X800 PCI-E with 256 meg Vram. All of the componets showed up today, and now he can't get the videocard to stay stable in any game. We have installed several different versions of the ATI driver, but no matter what the card stops responding after a few minuites into the game. He has XP Pro SP2 running, and an Antec True Power 2.0 430 for power, so i don't suspect that the PSU is bad. Does anybody have any ideas as to what the problem might be? Also, is there any way to monitor the temp of his card? We can't find one, and i wonder if that might be an issue.

So every component is new? Sounds like something other than the gpu or psu. Do you have a low power card you can try in the system? Are the cpu and gpu fans working? Is it only during graphic intensive games that it locks up?

Hmm, intel 630 (i think), it's the LGA775 EMT64 proc that runs at 3.4 ghz running the stock HSF, he also has an Abit mobo which uses DDR (not ddr 2), can't name the exact model off the top of my head. We are going to test the video card in another comp at the moment. I'm also beginning to think that the problem might be the proc, because my friend insists that there is nothing wrong with running prime95 for only a few min before he hits 69c, then at some point in there it locks (which he says is video card, though he also thinks the mobo might be bad). He also wants to OC the proc, which I told him is a bad idea, but he says that since it takes it gets to "only" 69 at 3.74 or so. The comp still locks up when he has the proc at stock temps, but it takes significantly longer to do so.
