there was an episode that shows data doing the night watch. the lights dim and everything to simulate night.
I was about to bring that up. There's a "night time" episode where Data assumes command during off-peak exploration hours with mostly Ensigns and Lieutanants under his bridge command. It's a fairly peaceful time where Data mostly just narrates his mental journal to the audience. Good ep.

I think you have to assume just like any warship we have sailing around Earth today, a starship steers clear of unknown quadrants and sticks to safe routes during off-hours. I suppose if kids are learning calculus in kindergarten by that time that humans also need a lot less sleep in the 24th century, so Picard et al would be awake for most of the action.

Some episodes you see Riker and Picard trading off shifts.

But yeah, the Enterprise usually has a 3 shift rotation (except in the 2 parter where captain Edward Jelico takes over command he moves the enterprise to a 4 shift rotation).

So they have different crew members on duty at the same time. Picard, Riker, et al, just always seem to be on duty when the interesting stuff happens.

Apperently there are inter-planetary standards on which shifts have the most experienced crews, so everyone keeps all the interesting stuff to that shift. Thus there's nothing to film in the other shifts 😉

I remember the episode with Captain Jelico. I didn't like him at all. It was a great episode though. 🙂

I don't think I've ever seen that episode. Do you remember the name of the episode and the season it was from? If it's on season one, two, or three I can watch it on DVD right now. I love my TNG collection. I can't wait until September when season four comes out. 🙂

There was a Voyager episode shot from the perspective of the night watch crew. Don't remember much about it. I didn't watch Voyager or the last few seasons of DS9 as religiously. It wasn't that I didn't like them... It was just that I was in college at the time, and I didn't keep up with any shows.

I don't know what's worse, the fact that you said that or that I understand exactly what you are talking about.... 😉

Lethal

I just said to my friend, "You know, it's pretty bad that i can read a thread about TNG and know EXACTLY what everyone is talking about." 🙂

Well, they said they were making another Star Trek series for television, perhaps it will be Enterprise-D: Graveyard Shift. 😉

In this week's exciting episode of Enterprise-D: Graveyard Shift, we see Ensign Bellweather cope with a potential interplanetary war after the janitor accidentally fires off a Photon Torpedo while cleaning the control panel, and obliterates a city on the planet they are orbiting.

They are making another Star Trek series for TV already? After only one season of Enterprise? I know Voyager and DS9 ran together for a while, but DS9 was out for a few seasons before they brought in Voyager.

Do you have any info on this show?

I saw my first trailer for ST: Nemesis the new movie last week.
<--- excited! 😀 😀

I hate you!!!

Okay...I don't hate you at all. You're actually pretty cool. But I'm excessively jealous 😉

Did they ever do an episode from the perspective of the night shift? Babylon 5 did that once, in a way. They did an episode shot from the perspective of a maintenance crew, with crazy events going on around them as they do their job. TNG could have put together an outstanding episode like that.

One that comes to mind is the DS9 episode where the Defiant is thrown back in time into the TOS episode "The Trouble With Tribbles". One funny scene is when O'Brien and Bashir are working on some power coupling and manage to take out the lights on part of the deck. They also can't figure out the turbolift.. Classic stuff 😀

"lower ranks" or "lower decks" or something focused on the grunts...

Noriaki I agree with you. Nemisis looks great!

I only plan on seeing two movies in a theater this year. One is Nemisis and the other is TTT.

Can't wait! 😀

Actually if Enterprise ever takes off... (ow... now that's a bad pun...) they're planning an "Enterprise: The Graveyard Shift" spinoff...

😉

damnit.... somebody stole my joke 🙁...

that's it... I'm gonna go watch my B5 SVCDs which I'll soon be throwing away.... 😉

You better believe it, Picard is the man. Having said that though, I loved Captain Sisko. Once Deep Space Nine finally took off Sisko was one of my favorite characters (next to Quark and Garak). It was classic when he punched Q 🙂

Oh how I miss that show.......too bad no stations play reruns of DS9 around here.

My favorite Captain, other than Picard, was Janeway. The cool thing is that she will be in Nemesis with Picard. 🙂🙂

My two fav Captains in one movie. Does life get any better. 🙂

eh, I never got into Voyager as much as DS9 or TNG.....of course back in the day I barely got any reception on UPN so I could never watch Voyager so that might have something to do with it 🙂

I keep hearing that Nemesis looks awesome but I have yet to check out the trailer. I almost don't want to look at it because if it looks awesome then the wait will probably kill me. Same goes with Lord of the Rings, up until I saw Austin Powers I never saw a preview and I was doing just fine, but now that I've seen the trailer I'm going to go insane waiting for it to come out.

I swear that it's some sort of cruel and unusual punishment to hype a movie up months or years before it's released. I think I'm going to sue the movie industry for all the mental anguish they cause me by making me wait for their movies to come out.

Hahah Garak and Quark rule all 😉
I also loved it when Sisko punched Q.

I never really liked Janeway. I found Voyager to be fairly medicore. It had some really good episodes. But it also had some spectularly crappy episodes to. Over all it was pretty medium.

It's too bad about no DS9 syndication 🙁 I love watching my DS9 episodes.

The episode where Data took over the night shift and narrated his experiences was called "Data's Day" - Season 4 if I remember correctly. Even if I'm wrong about Data's Day being the episode with the nightshift in it, it is still one of the best episodes I've ever seen on TNG.

wait a minute, i just saw that Nemesis preview. are you telling me that is going to be the last movie with Picard, Worf, and Data?

I hated DS9, and Voyager was complete crap, so TNG was the only Star Trek i watched religiously.🙁
