ST: TNG

Here's my question:

Picard, Riker, Worf, Troi, LaForge, and Beverly Crusher always seem to be awake at the same time. When they go to sleep, which seems like it would be at the same time, who is in control of the ship? I though that maybe it would be Data but he can only be in one place at a time.

That's when the grunts are in control. The lower ranking officers get to do the "graveyard" shift.

They pull shifts. There's a bunch of junior officers that assume the positions while the senior staff is off duty.

Some episodes you see Riker and Picard trading off shifts.

But yeah, the Enterprise usually has a 3 shift rotation (except in the 2 parter where captain Edward Jelico takes over command he moves the enterprise to a 4 shift rotation).

So they have different crew members on duty at the same time. Picard, Riker, et al, just always seem to be on duty when the interesting stuff happens.

Apperently there are inter-planetary standards on which shifts have the most experienced crews, so everyone keeps all the interesting stuff to that shift. Thus there's nothing to film in the other shifts 😉

Girl.

Do not think about the Star Trek universe.

It is a way of life, a faith. Not something to be questioned.

Now go watch that, WWF, and Nascar and allow me to get back to drinking my Steel Reserve.

Oh! So then I have to assume the crew member that is Captain for the moment would be Data.

I remember the episode with Captain Jelico. I didn't like him at all. It was a great episode though. 🙂

I don't know what's worse, the fact that you said that or that I understand exactly what you are talking about.... 😉

Well okay...I'm not that bad. Maybe my dweeb-o-meter just went off the scale and didn't blow up.
I don't go to ST Cons....I just watch the show alot.

Did they ever do an episode from the perspective of the night shift? Babylon 5 did that once, in a way. They did an episode shot from the perspective of a maintenance crew, with crazy events going on around them as they do their job. TNG could have put together an outstanding episode like that.

One that comes to mind is the DS9 episode where the Defiant is thrown back in time into the TOS episode "The Trouble With Tribbles". One funny scene is when O'Brien and Bashir are working on some power coupling and manage to take out the lights on part of the deck. They also can't figure out the turbolift.. Classic stuff 😀

there was an episode that shows data doing the night watch. the lights dim and everything to simulate night.

Well, they said they were making another Star Trek series for television, perhaps it will be Enterprise-D: Graveyard Shift. 😉

In this week's exciting episode of Enterprise-D: Graveyard Shift, we see Ensign Bellweather cope with a potential interplanetary war after the janitor accidentally fires off a Photon Torpedo while cleaning the control panel, and obliterates a city on the planet they are orbiting.
