I made a Star Trek Next Gen reference tonight and my wife (who gets the Star Wars and other Misc Sci-fi jokes I generally toss around) looked at me blankly. "Who's Data?" she said. I gasped.

That said, I need to know, in your opinions the 4 or 5 best episodes to show her so she can get some idea of the series... (I guess we could watch through all the movies, but I wanted to start with something that might draw her in more.)

Ideas?

The "first" episode where Picard finds data and he's humming that tune that he couldn't seem to remember.

Are you a Netflix member Xsorovan?

The Inner Light is a good episode and not *too* sci fi ish. It's the one where picard lives an entire life on some planet but only a day elapsed on the enterprise. maybe she would appreciate that one.

That's what I came in here to recommend. I believe it was voted 2nd favorite episode from the series.

first episode, last episode, any episode where worf is main character.

end.

First episode sucked.

"Oooh, giant happy space jellyfish were being exploited on the planet but now we've set them free! Oh yeah, and here is a token omnipotent being for the Captain to outsmart."

uh.. he asked for a representative selection of star trek.

the point of a first episode is to establish the personalities of the characters that will persist through the series. their reactions to situations based on their prejudices and the like.

in any case, that's also why i suggested the last episode, which is just pure awesomeness.

first episode, last episode, and the one where he creates his daughter.

I liked the daughter one quite a bit.

Don't forget the various Data versus Lore episodes, though some of them are of dubious quality. Then there are the Data/Sherlock Holmes episodes.

If she's anything like my wife she'll fall asleep while you're watching it.

BTW-My 6 year old son seems to like Star Trek-Enterprise. 😀

i hated the daughter one 🙁

data as holmes was cool...

but:

worf >= riker > data >>> picard >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>(xinfinity)>>> rest of the bridge crew.

somewhere down below ensign ricky, below any other extras and randoms they brought onto the set, somewhere below the pizza guy that delivers to the set, there is wesley.

TNG was such a good show. it sucks that some people won't even consider it because of the star trek geek stigma attached with it, like my gf. she'll watch other geeky shows though

four lights

Excellent choice, along with Inner Light.

If you are looking for Data specific episodes, there is one where Data dates a woman. That is a pretty good character study.

I got you beat, this blonde manager I worked for looked at my Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull cup and said "Who is that?"

I said, Indiana Jones. So she says "Like thats his name in real life?"

I facepalmed and said, "No, it's Harrison Ford"

She said

"What? Who is that?"

----

But on a serious note, my wife loves TNG and she bought me the COMPLETE set for my birthday, I'm still not even close to finishing the gargantuan set

EDIT:

I SECOND ANY EPISODE WHERE THEY RELAPSE INTO TIME EITHER DURING MID 20th CENTURY OR AS SHERLOCK HOLMES

i didn't really like data growing up with the series but watching it all back again in order he is one of my favorites

almost the entire bridge crew that's held throughout the series is introduced in the first episode, and it sets up the necessary idea of the "trial" that the last episode continues/concludes.

with regard to other episodes

the episode that introduces the picard maneuver
introduction of borg/picard assimilation and de-assimilation
picard overseeing klingon ascension

etc.

things like these are necessary to illustrate who the captain is, and why he reacts the way he does.

other things:

worf killing the guy who killed his "wife"

Data's Day is pretty fun, and so is that episode where he dates that engineering chick.

Well he is fully functional.

It figures the one man that sleeps with Tasha Yar and it has to be a battery operated love machine. 😉
