My girlfriend is doing an internship in St. Leonard, MD
[ map: http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&f=q&q=st.+leonard+maryland&btnG=Search+Maps ]

and I am flying out there for Thanksgiving and again in January. St. Leonard is ~50 miles southeast of Washington DC.

I have never flown into Washington DC/Maryland (only boston/ny), and I would like people's opinions on flying into Baltimore International, Dulles, or DCA. BWI has the cheapest flights, but how good is it's accessibility?

Thanks for your input!

I'm assuming your gf will be picking you up--if that's the case I'd say BWI (even though its farther than the other airports, your gf can avoid the beltway and just take smaller highways to get there.) The other best option is Reagan--you can take the metro from Reagan out to Alexandria and have your gf pick you up at the station--again avoiding most beltway and DC traffic. Dulles is your worst option looking at the map.

Reagan is probably closer, but if BWI is cheaper I would go that route. It's not that much farther and its easier to get in and out of than Reagan IMO.

From BWI, you can take I-97 down to 301, then pick up Route 4 from there.

Yeah what he said. I'd argue that with metro access Reagan is closer/faster to get to where you're going, but you're limited in choice of airline (likely US Airways, and they suck.) If you go the Reagan + metro route, Huntington (south end of the yellow line) is only 4 stops away so its a short train ride.

BWI is your best bet. Too bad you missed the Tiki Bar closing in Solomons Island!

yea, she is there for 10 weeks on an internship so that she can apply to Gradschool in early 2007. If that goes through and she gets into BU or someplace in Buffalo, then I just might become an easterner!

Curious, what type of internship in St. Leonard's? Place is fairly rural.

I was stationed at Pax River for a few years and then lived in Calvert country while at NASA.

As stated Reagan/National would be slightly closer, but almost a bigger pain to get over to MD due to traffic issues.

Look at airfares. Southwest likes BWI.

The area around Pax has really taken off in the last 5-10 years. There's been a lot of residential and commercial development, mainly due to government contractors expanding their presence.

The actual internship itself is in southeastern DC. It is for archeological artifact conservation. She has her BS in archeology and is hoping to get her MS in conservation. It is an unpaid internship (*cry*) but the do provide room and board at the ... Chesapeake Biological Labs. I believe the archeology & biology folks have an agreement to house interns wherever required.

I am blown away that she needs 400 hours of work at a conservatory to -apply- for her MS. It's ridiculous.

southeastern DC? she might want to rethink that internship or find one in a safer place, like Iraq.;)

I actually just looked up the place and yea, it is not even close to DC. It is on "Eagle Harbor" on Soloman's Island, nice and far away from the crazy amount of murders/rapes/etc that occur in DC.

I'm just glad my cutey is safe :)

Figure that she will have a 20-30 minute comute from St Leonards to EagleHarbor.
Rt 2/4 became a 4 lane highway a few years ago.

In the mid 80's it was a backroad windy 2 liner.

Yea, I mentioned that to her tonight and she said that it is < 2 blocks away from where she is staying. She said that it needs to reopen because it looks like a pretty cool place.

We are so on top of technology that we chat on Ventrilo! I am glad that I got her into WoW, and thus familiar with Vent/Skype/TS, as it will definitely save us a bundle on cell phone minutes :)
