Reading Dartblazer post was the final straw. I couldn?t take my loud case any more!

I feel I?ve come full circle in my computer parts thinking. I used to buy only the cheapest mobo?s and parts, I now only buy quality. I used to care less about noise as long as it was better, I now want to sleep in the same room as my computer.

I had a Alpha PAL6030 with a ys-tec heat sink, Blue Orb for the DDR, Quantum LS30, and an older Antech case with 2 fans (PS and front case fan)

When I was having hard disk activity it sounded like the case was coming apart and the droning/whine of the fans was driving me crazy.

Here?s what I did to quiet it down.

I got a Taliso HS (the one with the 10mm thick fan) switched it to 7v. I switched my BLORB and front case fan to 7v (the blorb was actually very loud). Swaped out the PS fan (Magic) with a Sunon kd1208pts3 30cfm at 24dbl, much nicer. I cut out the fan grill on the PS and front case fan also using foam tape(with only one side peeled off) to insulate the PS and front fan from the case, to prevent them from transmitting vibe noise. I also used the foam tape to separate the HD from the mount and rubber washers on the screw heads to further prevent vibe.

The most drastic change was the Quantum LS drive? it?s a nice grunt sound is such a stark contrast to it?s former hammer banging racket.

I would STRONGLY encourage anyone who can?t take it any more to try these fixes. I?m also thinking of using cardboard on the case cover.

I can hear you guys now saying ?what about heat? well my Cel2-566@850 is very picky about heat. It won?t run at 850 with a stock Intel HS. So I?m sure she?d let me know (by crashing) if the temp was getting even a little to warm in there? so far, it?s fine.

Good luck,
Bart

Heh, I could use some of those silencing tricks ... my room sounds like a hurricane  Two uncovered FOP32-1, three comps, and none of them sound proofed

Too bad I'm too lazy to do anything about it, and I've learnt how to sleep with the noise... Good tips tho'

Thanks for mentioning me. Im actually gonna go ahead and use a few of your mods, except i think im gonna go with some sort of sound insulation rather than just cardboad, and the foam tape idea is damn good. Gotta get me some of that for my hard drive and cd rom drive(52x is fast but loud as hell).

edit: just got an idea and was wondering if it would work. Get a good heatsink, and instead of just having the fan on top of it have another fan on the side of the heatsink. Twice as much airflow without that much more noise? Or would they cause turbulence to each other?

And why hasn't any responded to my question of how much noise water cooling makes?

As I said in another tread: you should not live in your computer room.
Place you keyb, mouse an screen in another room.
Only get in there for swapping media.
Don't forget you only live once ! Don't make it a short one.
