ssh public keys randomly stop working

I use ssh public keys for my backups, and I noticed at random intervals some will stop working and it will start prompting for the password. I then have to go and recreate the keys and reapply. Why is this, do those expire after a while?

any chance there is an IP address change?

Hmm not that I recall, would that do anything? there is a slight possibility as I was restructuring my network

go look at the trusted keys file. it associates IP's with the key.
