Just ordered a Athlon 64 3000+ winchester. Should i cancel and wait for Venice? Im not going to overclock. So the question is SSE3 worth canceling for? Any clue that the processor is going to cost more than current winchesters?? Thanks for any info :)

Not SSE3...It is not really optimized in many apps now...The only reason to cancel was if you were planning a big OC attempt..and in that case unless you have one helluva a mobo you will have troubles getting som of the venice core 3000+ to OC high cause it wil take a really high HTT....So that being said what mobo are or will you be using???

If not overclocking I would only go for the Venice if I planned on using 4 sticks of memory. The improved memory controller on the Venice is supposed to provide better performance with 4 sticks as opposed to the current chips.

any reason to get 2GB within the next year or 2? Ill be keeping this setup for that long atleast.. The motherboard im getting is a soltek SL-K8TPRO-939..

I currently have 1GB but was possible thinking of getting 2GB in the future if needed..

oh ya the computer is used to mostly play games. liek world of warcraft. Any reason to get 2GB of memory or will 1GB be plenty????? :) also wouldnt the winchester support 4 sticks of memory if the memory was single sided???

4 sticks of single sided memory at pc3200 2t is supported for winchester.

4 sticks double sided pc2700 max is supported.

ok.. and in the new venice 4 sticks of double sided PC3200 is supported?

I see :) thanks. So if i have single sided memory already. Then really i might as well keep the winchester

Is that why I can only get PC3200 2T speeds no matter what i try? (with 4 sticks)

i'd prefer waiting for venice. The memory controller is better, and it's about 1-2% faster clock for clock. SSE3 is nice, but doesn't do much in the benches i've seen, although i suspect it's because most SSE3 optimized code is optimized for PNE (Prescott new instructions) which is SSE3 plus 2 hyperthreading related instructions. I get the feeling they don't recognize AMD's SSE3 because of that. Either way, I think 2GB will be a common thing for gaming rigs soon, and so a venice is a better buy for that reason alone.

Hi, I'm new here!

I'm in a similar situation as the original poster. I can get the Winchester 3000+ for as little as ?120. I don't overclock. I expect Venice 3000+ to go for ?160 at least initially. I can't see any reason to stick it out for Venice.

If SSE3 gives only a very slight performance edge on the Prescott compared to the Northwood, you can safely assume Venice A64 will gain even less in terms of performance by SSE3 than the Winchester.

The only real reason to go for Venice is for the improved memory controller. From what I have read Venice can handle four DDR sticks @ 1T timing, however I'm not sure whether its 4 single-sided RAM only or 4 doubled-sided ones. Can anyone clarify?

If the only the former is true I must say the improvement is pretty lame since most 512MB sticks are double-sided and running 4 of them still requires a drop to 2T, which is the same for Winchesters.

I'm confused here. I have a 3500 winchester and I have 4 sticks or double-sided 512 pc3200 in my pc to total 2gigs and it works. Whats going on with that? Or is it not really working and Im not seeing it?

I'll take a wild guess and say you aren't running at 1T

So I'm not seeing an improvement?

So that explains it. I bought 2gigs of PC3200 and installed it in my MSI K8N Neo2 Platinium with a AMD64 3000+ Whinny. I looked at the bootup info and it said I was running at 166Mhz. I couldn't figure out why, and I couldn't change it.

You might be able to force it to a 200 Mhz setting (or to 1T) but then the system won't POST. I have the same board with 2 gigs and I have to run a divider at 2T. I've heard conflicting views on whether the Venice/San Diego cores allow you to run 4x512 double-sided at 1T WITHOUT a divider; I'll believe it when I see it. I know for sure they eliminate the divider but I'm not sure about the 1T command rate. However, 1T vs. 2T does not appear to have a huge impact at all on real-world performance, so if I can get rid of the divider I'm very happy. My new CPU arrives on Monday! :p
