SSDs for laptops

Hi.

I am considering buying a 14" laptop, either the HP DV4, Pavilion G4 or Probook 4440s (not ultrabooks as budget is tight). All of these come with crappy 5400 rpm HDDs. I was wondering if it would be possible to replace the HDDs with Intel 520/330 SSDs manually?

for you maybe. for me and millions of other people, its a perfect size for a laptop.

Not only can you rip out the mechanical hdd and replace with an silly smooth ssd, but also stuff it full of SO-DIMMS on the cheap from NewEgg, nnn. So when you are ordering, make sure to spec the bare minimum. Just pick an ssd with ultra low TDP for maximum battery life, like the Samsung 830/840. And too, those slow ass molasses 5400rpm hdd's make fantastic external drives with only $15 on a usb 3.0 enclosure, like the Coolmax.

thanks a lot - I guess I was wondering that the 520/330 come packaged as drives for desktops even at 2.5" and will not be a replacement for the included 2.5" HDDs in laptops (height maybe an issue). thanks for resolving

Majority of SSDs are the "industry standard" 2.5" size with 9.5mm thickness.

Some thin notebooks require a thinner 7mm thickness drive. SSDs are available in that thinner size, but you have to look for them specifically.

Nowadays, a lot of 2.5SSDs are 7mm thick, and that includes all of Samsung 830s. They fit with no problem in any standard 2.5-n laptop drive cage.

Yea and if you are feeling adventurous you can change out the cd drive for an additional hard drive slot.
