SSD Vertex 2 120GB for CDN$260+tax ($230 after MIR)

That's a US site with prices in US$ though, things tend to be cheaper over there.

Although there are several other places in Canada with a price of ~250-$260, this is the lowest I could find (with MIR). They were $350-$400 until very recently, even Intel's 80GB is >$200 here, and Vertex is faster and 50% bigger. I'd almost jump on it, but want to wait for Intel's G3 to see what they bring to the table.

Is this one a good deal for the type and amount of GB? Is now the time to buy one of these drives? I want to take the plunge into SSD but know next to nothing about them.

next gen is coming out after xmas ... i'm waiting.

Next gen Sandforce (which is what this SSD is using for it's controller chip) will be quite a step up in speed. Also, next gen will be on smaller process for the memory chips which means you should get more space for the same amount you would pay for a gen 2 drive.

As with all technology you can buy it now, because there will always be "the next best thing" around the corner. If you don't need it right now and are ok with waiting, gen 3 will be a significant improvement over gen 1. SandForce 2000 controllers are claimed to get 80% increase in throughput over current stuff. There will be a price premium for that though. If you wait until gen 3 you can either buy a gen 2 cheap as they are offloaded, or you can buy a gen 3 at the same price as a gen 2 today most likely. It just depends on what you want.
