I've been watching my reallocated sectors creeping up over the last few months. It started at 88 sometime this summer, and is now at 115. I'll be replacing the drive soon when I make the time. None of my other drives have displayed this alarming sector failure. Two questions; what causes the failures, and how many dead sectors is too many?

One is too many if it happens to be storing critical data on say a boot volume, it's all a game of roulette once it starts. Surely an 870 EVO is within the 5-year warranty? IMO it's a no-brainer, instant RMA.

That is an alarming number of bad sectors in any case. I wonder if a cell is dying.

Could also be a bad SATA power connector if this is in a desktop PC. Maybe getting slightly overvolted.

Thanks guys. I guess I'll look into an rma, but I don't know if I feel like dealing with it. I might just buy a new drive. This one's an extra, and fully backed up, so I'm not terribly worried about data loss. It'll just be a minor hassle changing drives, and transferring data back.

That's very interesting. I have some reading to do before buying a replacement. Thanks for that.

The only SSD I've ever had fail outright was a Samsung 840Pro, flat stopped working one night after about 6 months of use. I got a refurb SSD back from RMA... so I wasn't a very happy customer.
