SSD Noise

I have a Thinkpad T400s with the Lenovo supplied Samsung 128GB SSD - SAMSUNG MMCRE28G8MXP-0VBL1.

At times of heavy reads or writes, such as the initial stages of running Windows Update, I hear screeching/scratching sounds. A search resulted in this idea

What you're hearing is almost certainly power converter noise. This usually emanates from the coils associated with DC/DC converters.

While I'm sure if you have a desktop you won't hear anything, using a laptop the drive is only a couple of feet from my ears making it more noticeable. I'm not concerned with eliminating the sound for reasons of annoyance as it's so infrequent, but it's more of a concern that the drive, controller, or other parts involved in drive activity or supplying power to them may be failing, in which case I'd starting backing up data on here more frequently.

Anyone else experience this noise and have anything fail on them after a while?

Yeah, I notice the same thing with my Intel 320 raid 0 array. I don't think it will cause an issue though.

My MMCRE 128gb Samsung (Dell) makes noise too. Has done so since it was new. Now nearly 2 years old.

Thanks for confirming that its not all in my head 🙂

Guys, are you sure the sound is coming from inside the SSD and not some power related component in the computer? On a notebook, it would be pretty hard to tell since everything is crammed together very close.

As it is with silent computing that's more easily possible with a laptop... once you remove the HDD noise, you'll end up focusing on other noise. I wish the inverter on my LCD screen was silent, but oh well... maybe my next laptop will be completely silent. I thought at 1st it was another fan, but it was just the inverter buzzing.

Intel G2 160gb in my desktop. 2 years old. -- Silent.
Intel 320 Series 160gb in my laptop. 2 weeks old. -- Silent.

Never heard of such thing with SSD's making noise.

A search on google will reveal that I and the other posters here are (hopefully) not losing our minds. 😀

As stated, the issue only happens on certain occasions during heavy drive activity - evidenced by the HDD activity light at full brightness & blinking spastically. It doesn't happen during all heavy usage, only occasionally.

Again, it could very well be something else as I mentioned in the OP, but with the others in this thread also experiencing it, I'm a bit more comfortable now in assuming that the drive isn't a lemon and about to croak.

And for the non-believers, here's a recent video of someone with a similar experience: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmOSak2fe7A

I've bought 3 Intels and 1 Samsung and none have made any noise.

I'd think if an SSD was squeeling like in those videos there was something wrong with it.
