SSD... No noticeable improvement in speed!

I got two Kingston 64Gb SSDs in Raid 0, which I am using for OS install and a few games. I am sure I set up everything correctly. I checked and double checked this.

Sadly I see absolutely no increase in speed. People report apps and games loading instantly. Never the case for me. Everyhting loads as fast as it used to on my 7200rpm hard drives. What's worse, I get hickups and freezes. They dont happen often enough to make me start thinking abotu an RMA, but it's still very annoying and I dont understand why this is happening.

I had only one fatal freeze so far where I had to resart the system. The other freezes only stay on for like 3-5 secons and then the system continues working as normal. This usually happen when there is some kind of writing being done. for example when I save a word file. It aslo hapens every time I open firefox. For the first 2-5 seconds it's unusable.

I checked the firmware update but I already have the latest firmware.

Any ideas what else I can try?

I had a similar experience when I bought my c300. Had to RMA the first one to get rid of the freezing, then get a different motherboard to realize its full potential. On my 880itx board I saw similar performance to my old laptop drive I had in there. Wound up buying an H67+2600k, now it works as advertised. I guess it wasn't playing nice with the controller.

In AHCI mode? Wait, no, that's not it, if you are in RAID mode, then it is a superset of AHCI mode, and you are using AHCI.

what sata ports are you using? what is the model/controller used on the Kingston ssds?

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but I didnt have time to deal with this untill now. I still need help with my SSD disks because they still perform very poorly. Here are the bench results. I dont know how to read them, so maybe someone can tell me what they mean?

For the sake of comparison, here's what I just got with a single Intel X-25M G2 120Gb (2500K running at stock speed). Something does appear to be amiss.

They mean your SSDs are likely functioning properly. I'm not sure why the performance improvement isn't tangible to you.
Because there is absolutely no improvement over spinning disks. I never had an occurrence where an app or a game would load faster or at least noticeably faster. In fact, it seems to me like performance is actually slower sometimes than on spinning disks.

Sometimes, when browsing folders on this RAID array the system locks up for about 3-5 sec and I hear an audible humming sound. (the contents of the folder do not display) After that everything returns to normal and the contents of the folder appear all at once. I am 100% sure it's the SSDs. This wasn't happening before. But what can it be?

write caching is disabled by default on all Intel raids. And I would post an AS SSD benhcmark instead since that one(CDM3) writes 20 gigs of test trash to fill your drive and just slow it down even more. AS SSD also gives much more config/alignment info to help further.

Use either one of these locations to enable write-back caching for improved performance. One's the device mgrs drive properties tab and the other is the Intel RST raid app.

is your motherboard bios completely up to date? it may not be playing nice with your SSDs. which kingston models are these? which controller? it's not normal for your computer to hard freeze at all. my intel 320s in raid0 never freeze or stall.

😵

What OS are you running?

Win 7 Ultimate.

But I am not using these SSDs for cache... What does Intel RST have to do with it?

And what is AS SSD?

The 4k randoms are rubbish, was this a clean install as it doesnt look as if 4k is aligned....

Not quite. I been using this PC a few months since clean install. But I noticed horrible performance right after clean install, and it never changed since then.

Pretty sure my mobo is up to date. I will check again.

These are two Kingston SSD Now! 64Gb SSDs in RAID 0.
Pretty sure it's this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139415 was $64 each AR on Buy.com.

How do I tell which controller? Is it in the mobo manual?

That is why I asked what controller/what type of SSD. Not all SSDs are created equal, they can vary quite profoundly in performance from lower end to the cutting edge. (though keep in mind some cutting edge SSDs will also have reliability issues.

Afaik, the kingston SSD now series is mid lower end. If you want the best performance, do some research first, read reviews, and find out what SSD is right for you. Keep in mind the latest ones are SATA 6G, and will want a SATA 6 G port to work optimally.

In the future, I would recommend SSDs such as the latest intel, sandforce, and cruicial for the best performance. Again though, also take into account the reliability factor.

i don't think that 4Ks are problem, not that much that SSD would appear as slow as 7200rpm drive. I would think there's something else going on on the system making it laggy. Some huge resource hog like McAfee AV.

Look at the speed test he posted, 512k is awesome, 4k looks like a floppy drive.
