SSD Locked after used of Samsung Magician

Hi,

was going to put a Samsung 840 EVO I had laying around into my stepmothers PC to speed it up while I was visiting for New Year.

Normally, I use other tools for this (like hdparm on linux), but in this case, the magician seemed the easiest to get the thing properly erased, but somehow the machine ended up crashing and resetting while just after I started the erase.

End result, I have a SSD that has been locked, but not erased.
The Magician lists it as locked and won't try. hdparm lists it as locked as well and while I haven't tried hard, at least "NULL" which samsung lists as sample use of hdparm on their web site does not work.

Anyone has any idea what password is set by the samsung magician for this (this is the windows version, not DOS/ISO)?

I was also trying to file a ticket on samsung's web site, but no luck finding a place that actually work for SSD support. Tried to talk to their online chat as well, but they only told me this was not a product they supported...

Anyone know how to get in touch with support there?

Thanks for any help!

You could try using something like Acronis to see if it can access the drive and reformat it, but if not, it sounds like RMA time.

Samsung's SSD RMA is run by an outside contractor.... you won't ever be able to file online... use the phone number, once I made the call on my 840Pro, they had a new unit on the way that day.

I would use DELPART.EXE to BUST the SSD Partitions then Re-Partition and format the SSD with Diskpart and over-write each partition with your Backup Images or just re-install Win, Samsung Magician is a piece of Crap!

If that don't work either your SATA cable or the SSD is NFG or your RAM timing is off or bad.

There's also a cheap and available shareware/software that may deal with the problem as I recall: Parted Magic.

Parted Magic.
Partition Magic - Another piece of Crap.

I can't understand why so many members on this forum shy away from using Diskpart. If you have even the slightest knowledge of DOS , Diskpart command line instructions are straight forward.

Hi,

thanks for all the answers, but there is a difference here.

This drive is not in frozen state (bios protecting it) which is what the hot plug method will work for.

When doing secure erase, you first enable encryption on the drive (locking it) then you do an erase.

This drive is in that locked state which requires a password to unlock :(

I have erased Samsung SSDs many times as I rotate the in and out of backup roles. I use the USB method* to scrub it and never been put into a situation where I chose to encrypt the SSD. If it is done passively (and transparently) as a background item then I would never be aware of it.

This is what happens behind the hood.

Sorry, I am not correct in terms of saying that this enables encryption. Just you need to password enable the drive as part of this.

That's also good, but you have Parted Magic mixed up with an old commercial disk management program -- Partition Magic.

The Parted Magic program creates a bootable CD -- often the type of thing we want to have handy. Even the Acronis software that works WITHIN Windows requires reboot to a Linux-based program that completes the cloning and some other processes offered by the software. If I use Acronis for anything, I prefer to use the bootable CD and work outside of Windows.

Parted Magic has a simpler and also more primitive menu than you would find in other drive utilities. In addition to cloning, it provides the Secure Erase feature you might want to use to restore an SSD. The reason I mentioned it: I'm pretty sure I encountered within it the ability to "unlock" an SSD. In fact, this feature was integral to the Secure Erase process.

I actually used to be a DOS "whiz," 20 and 30 years ago. Now, I find that I'm about 5 years too late just to learn about the "RoboCopy" command.

I'm still a DOS FAT 32 32GB Vol Backup Fiend ;o)

You can take it any way you want but DOS over Microsoft will never absolve Dos as long as their OS Boots to an Primary DOS Active Partition with a GLDR Boot Manager.

Windows requires DOS to Boot and EUFI is just a MASK.

DOS RULES MS - PERIOD.

Screw Partition Magic and Acronis - Just learn how to use DOS Bootable FAT32 32GB Flash Thumbs with Ghost.EXE with a Win SYS-Prep Image. Forget about any other fool proof 3 party BACKUP app and learn how to use Win 7's EFI boot Diskpart Media Preparation which can also be loaded on a Flash Thumb Bootable USB Drive. DOS Backup Images are Fool Proof for dumping your OS onto about any Hardware and you don't see OOBE.

The only way you're going to get this password is to ask Samsung.

I live in the UK and on the UK Samsung support site there is an option called Email us (linked below). Click that link and choose your product and then next. It'll say there's no FAQ topics or something and keep pressing next until you get to the bit where you fill in your details and submit your support request.
