SSD choice.. slightly different needs

I have read all the FAQs here, and now I'm looking of specific advice.

I'm NOT looking for an SSD for performance.

I use a laptop onstage, so I'm concerned that bass vibrations will crash my current hard drive in the middle of a show. I need an SSD for XP, but speed isn't really an issue.

Need about 80g. Any suggestions around $100, or do I need to wait more for prices to drop?

Intel just released a 120GB SSD for around $230 and there's an upcoming new generation from pretty much all makers -- which means the current gen lower capacity drives will be dropping in price soon (months?).

about 4 years ago I made a post about this, everyone said no such bass can harm a spinning HDD. But that was 4 years ago, no idea if there has been advancement in woofer slol

If I adjust my needs to 60g, has anyone seen any deals around that make sense for me to look at?

http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php...RealSSD-C300-SATA3-Solid-State-Drive-MLC&c=CJ use coupon code KICKOFF to get it at $105.

You would probably be better off sticking with a drive that has better GC though since XP doesn't have TRIM. You will find a sandforce/indilinx drive at this price soon enough.

Don't know much about this one, but it is $85 shipped after rebate: http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0340924

OCZ Onyx, is that indilinx?

That Microcenter one looks good to me, but I guess there' still a lot I don't know about SSDs.

Can anyone comment on why I would not want that one?

Technology hasn't changed much; subs have only increased their maximum excursion by 1/2-1" total, from around 2.5", but the amount of subs that have greater excursions is increasing significantly due to lower costs.

I wouldn't HD's too close to my sub 😉

In my case I'm not talking about home subs. I'm on stage with huge sound systems, and stuff moves like crazy.

sandforce drives well they have crappy firmware. they like to sleep and not wake up 'in time' or cold start too slowly. They tend to not work with pata2sata converters. It's all in the timing - you take an intel or indilinx and these problems go away. they keep patching the firmware to improve the issue but i've yet to see a 100% perfect (as in intel or indilinx) implementation.

any 12" sub can destroy a hard drive - you should never subject such harsh vibrations to spinning media

So for my needs, do you all recommend an Intel SSD because of XP use?

The FAQ seems to lean that way, but I don't see any in that price range.

Pardon my near-total ignorance on the topic, but couldn't an unshielded, large speaker throw a really big magnetic field that could interfere with a mechanical hdd?

Going to have to agree after getting burned with an OCZ this week. Intel all the way.

also a previous OCZ consumer. I don't hate them, just that the Intels are much better.. I might consider a Corsair too but it's Intel for me. Not going to bother posting my issues with my old Vertex.. but they aren't total trash I just will only buy Intel for my own use or recommend it to others.

Waiting on the Intel G3 drives. Otherwise I would consider the new Corsair 6GB drives when they come done in price a bit.

I don't see an Intel 64g near $100, so I guess I need to wait, unless someone can suggest another drive that will be good for me..

I got a bit annoyed with OCZ when I had to find a computer that didn't boot via AHCI (or switch a PCI back to IDE) just to flash my old Vertex 120GB drive. My Intel drives have treated me well so far.

When I went to buy a SSD for my brother, I considered a Sandforce-based one, but I read about the sleep issues. I don't use sleep myself, but I can't guarantee that he won't. So I just bought him an Intel drive even though some of the sequential speeds are a little slower (but randoms are still great).

Had the an OCZ Vertex 60gb drive with the Indilinx controller and had no problems. Filling it up is going to affect performance though, but that's not your main reason for going SSD so it should be OK.
