SSD Caching with RAID System

I'm building a system with a LSI MegaRAID SAS 9286CV-8eCC SAS/SATA PCI Express 3.0 Raid Controller using the PROMISE VTrak J930s 6G SAS 4U/60-Bay Ultra-Dense Enclosure Expansion Chassis with 60 HITACHI Ultrastar 15K600 SAS 3.5” Enterprise HDD and a RAID MACHINE 4 bay 1U 6G Hot Swap SAS/SATA External Enclosure with 4 OCZ Octane 1TB Sata III SSD Drives to enable SSD Caching. How do I set up this system?

You seem to have come in to a bit of money or a job you aren't qualified for... I can take either off your hands.

I just build my server using a msa70 and msa50. These are 2.5 sas drives. I have 35 146gb sas drives and a few 300gb. I'm actually in the process of switching to 300gb sas drives till the 256gb ssd just came down to 160 bucks.

For that price, I'm better off using 256gb ssd as my main drive and sell of my 146gb sas drives.

If you want to setup ssd caching for drive array like that, you need the right software. I'm using NexentaStor NAS, VMWare support and uses SSD as cache.

Are those 256GB SSDs even close to enterprise grade? Because' I'm seeing SAS 200GB SSDs for like $300. (The enterprise grade ones tend to over-provision more.) Even the SATA ones start at around $300. Intel's are like $800.

Now, for $160 each, you can afford to replace a lot of failed units, but just saying - that may be an issue.

It depends. What OS are you running?

Dave he said he is using 1TB Vertex 4's, not 256GB. OCZ don't even make a 1TB Vertex 4. This thread is total BS.

no just the crucial m4 and samsung units.. i call these things disposable units...

i doubt they'll fail that often, but hopefully raid controller can take care of it
